07:55 AM ET 10.25 | Hello, Brooklyn! When The Hockey News informed legendary New York Islanders defenseman Denis Potvin that his only NHL franchise would be relocating to Brooklyn, N.Y. in 2015, the Hockey Hall-of-Famer grew more melancholy as the news settled in. "You're kidding," Potvin said when THN informed him. ... "Even though my relationship with the Islanders is very minimal, I was a big supporter of them trying to get the vote for (a new arena to replace Nassau) and keep the team in Uniondale. But one thing about Mr. Wang, he likes a lot of control and obviously he's not willing to give up the franchise, which is a good thing for continuity." ... "The more I think about this, the more it makes me sad."

Most guys will tell you Denis that Mr. Wang usually controls everything.

E

Being a Rangers fan I think this is great....NY and the NHL keep one of their biggest rivalries intact...the only loser in this is Hempstead Township Supervisor Kate Murray ....she will go down in Long Island history as the person responsible for losing the Islanders.....Nassau County originally got the land for just about nothing from the government (used to be Mitchell Field Army / Airforce Base) a new building would have brought Nassau County into the modern ages of sporting and events that everyone on Long Island could have enjoyed..Now not only are they losing the Islanders..their economy is going to take a large hit.....I find it ridiculous that Long Island wouldn't somehow band together to keep this storied franchise on Long Island.....

With the headline and picture I thought they would be talking about Ricky D but this works too

Agree.

Grew up in the shadows as a kid; played my puck in an adjacent aircraft hangar ala ice rink.

Demographics have changed. Years and years of mismanagement have led to the fan being turned away. I was talking about this with my Dad....all the government jobs such as Grumman Sperry Northrop are all gone....sad.

I was going to ask Potvin what makes him more sad, this news or seeing Rickity in those pads and Islanders jersey. Could have made it worse by putting up a picture of Yashin.

My uncle was a 30+ year Navy man...he retired and worked another 20 years for Grumman....I just find this whole thing as a travesty for Long Island.....it'll be another shopping mall...of even worse they may decide on low income housing....just what that area needs.....that a joke....

I feel for you SS and Rangers too...the stories of both your Fathers and such...sad and that's no joke.

October 25, 2012  12:39 PM ET

Sorry...your Uncle...Rangers Dad.

October 25, 2012  01:15 PM ET

Thanks. Weird as it is; I grew up a Rag's fan...Pops and the neighbors loved the Isles and rightfully so. After the heart break of the Giants and Dodgers that generation finally had a team that was their own. Truely on Long Island and a part of NY. They got to witness first hand what Torre built post expansion which culminated with the 4 cups.

I honeslty have to say as a hockey fan (not NYR fan) I got to witness some of the greats on those Islanders dynasty teams sitting along side Pop at NC. I remember vividly Bossy's march for 50.

Just sad to see all that history go from that area of NY and escape that building. But hopefully the franchise finds a rebirth in Brooklyn.

October 25, 2012  01:25 PM ET

This was predictable in it's inevitability.

As a side note:

Denny Potvin was a character. Got to meet and hang with him on several occassions as a kid since the Isles organization supported local youth hockey. He would always have a beer and a cigarette.
