08:20 AM ET 10.26 | Earlier this week, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said one of the reasons he hadn't asked Mariano Rivera about his future was that he didn't want to know the answer, and yet the Yankees may have a clearer picture. [Yankees GM] Brian Cashman said closer Mariano Rivera informed him earlier this week that he is unsure if he will play again or retire. Cashman told ESPN New York that on Tuesday he and Rivera had a conversation in which Rivera said he does not know yet if he will return for a 19th season. "He wasn't certain on what he is going to do," Cashman said. After he crumbled to the turf and tore his ACL in Kansas City in early May, Rivera vowed he would return in 2013.

It will be a sad day when he does retire.

Sounds like after having the summer off to spend time with his kids and what not, retirement is looking better to him. At some point, the grind of the season just isn't fun anymore.

You have the rings, money, and 18 years of service, your body is telling you that it is time, so go out on top and don't hang around like others and embarrass yourself.

We're in a funny spot...If Mo comes back, that could obviously only be a short term deal, when a longer term solution is desired...like Soriano. Maybe Mo would agree to come back and get one last save and retire on that note? One of my all-time favorite players.

Mr. Rivera....... you have been part of 5 World Series Winners, been the most dominant reliever in the past 30+ years, guaranteed your spot in the Hall of Fame......... but do not take a dump on your legacy by trying to make a comeback if your body just won't do it..........

It's time for the Yanks to seriously think about rebuilding. They paid $30 mil for Soriano and Rivera last year which is more than many teams spend on their entire bullpen. You'd think they could find a cheaper option (Robertson?) and allocate that $30 elsewhere, especially with the goal of getting payroll under $189 mil by 2014.

I agree - let Soriano go. They paid $30 mil for Soriano and Rivera last year which is more than many teams spend on their entire bullpen.

They need to seriously consider rebuilding. CC is starting to show his age. Maybe I'm crazy but I think they should explore trading him while his value is still high. Maybe trade CC and a bad contract a la the Sox in the Gonzalez/Beckett/Crawford salary dump.
Granderson could be moved for good value.
I know this is blasphemy, but I think they should consider trading Cano. He is one of the best hitters in baseball but he will already be 31 when he becomes a free agent.

Mo does this often. Everytime his contract is up. He throws around the r word more than Brett Favre did. Then he eventually comes back.

Rivera may just be waiting until he can figure out whether or not he can still pitch. Just because he is working out doesn't mean the knee has healed well enough to play at a major league level.
