Mets, Phillies may target Melky Cabrera

09:04 AM ET 10.28 | The Mets were one club that came up regularly as a potential landing spot for Melky Cabrera, as were the outfield-needy Phillies. The Mets need outfielders and don't have a ton of money to address their severe needs there. So if they could bag Cabrera as corner outfield insurance against Jason Bay and Lucas Duda, it could make sense, especially if they are unable to retain Scott Hairston. Probably at his worst, Cabrera would be a motivated fourth outfielder who always could hit righties well, with the possibility he is more than that if any of the improvements of the past two years are real.

If I am the Mets I would only pay Melky the minimum salary with incentives because you really don't know what you are getting without drug help.

It's not an addiction. He used HGH. He probably won't again so he's not addicted. The question is whether he'll be the same player without it.

He's done his time. It is starting to look as though a 50 game suspension is not a big enough dis-incentive, and the league and the players association need to look at a longer first-time sentence.

This is false. MLB doesn't test for HGH.

It will be a proud moment for whichever franchise signs him. Yes, he's "done his time", but it doesn't mean you have tie a yellow ribbon 'round the ol' oak tree for him.
