Megatron has the yips

08:03 AM ET 10.29 | Matthew Stafford threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns Sunday, and yet Detroit's star receiver had little to do with any of it. This Calvin Johnson blip goes beyond deep cover safeties and brackets. It goes beyond the Madden curse and all the other demons that swim around him. Calvin Johnson has the yips, which has resulted in the drops. He is not playing like Megatron and there are reasons that go beyond excuses. Unfortunately, he has turned into Megadrop. ... But here is the excuse and I'm sticking with it. Johnson's knee is bothering him and it does not allow him to push off the line and push away from defensive backs like he is used to. The burst is gone and Johnson looks like a normal NFL receiver running his routes.

Johnson is also dealing with double teams almost all the time.

WTF is the "yips"? is there a cure, a vaccine, any kind of therapy or treatment at all? Enquiring minds want to know!

It's like "Yipes! Stripes!"

Its called record signing contract. Happens all the time.

I don't see the correlation between a bad knee and dropped passes.

Sometimes it's the Hits, sometimes it's the coverage and sometimes you just drop the ball, the better the receiver, the better the coverage, it happens, Nix and Cruz were dropping them yesterday!

October 29, 2012  09:32 AM ET

I guess he figures he might as well drop it cause he can't run with it.

Is that anything like the trots?

Double, if not triple coverage.......

Hard to get going when people are camped on you all day. He sure did knock the dog crap out of Richard Sherman though. You don't cheese Megatron off. He is a large man with large biceps. Just an FYI is all.

Or like Dez who catches it...finally, then sticks his hand over the endzone line. I'll take my chances, if I was Stafford, on Calvin anytime.

Yips are when you get tight. Ever see a baseball player freeze up when making a throw to 1st and end up throwing it straight into the ground or into the stands. That's the yips. Apparently happens in golf too when people putt, they just freeze. I never heard of the yips when catching a ball though. Yips usually occur for more finesse/precision type of sports plays. Maybe the author is way off base.

I was almost sure that the curse could not extend to this guy, I thought if there was anyone in the league it wouldn't touch it would be him. Win some, lose some
