02:58 AM ET 10.30 | Taj Gibson is in the final year of his contract and the last thing the Bulls want to do is have a situation like the one that transpired this offseason when restricted free agent Omer Asik was stolen away by the Houston Rockets. Asik, like Gibson, was a restricted free agent but the Bulls failed to reach a contract extension with him and believed they could hash out a deal in the offseason. The two sides are still $2 million apart on a deal, but they must reach an agreement by Oct. 31, the deadline to extend contracts of current players. The Bulls are in the same position they were in last season with Asik, but this time the prize on the line is a larger piece of the potential championship puzzle.

ps-love the name of the blog's source

"Gibson wants $10 million a year, the Bulls want to give him $8 million a year" From the site. Like I thought he is in the 8 per range. I think they will agree somewhere in the middle. 4yr 36 million

I wouldn't call Taj a larger piece of a championship puzzle... that's deception or illusion right there depending on who you talk to. Something's wrong in the Bulls camp!

I don't think the Bulls can afford to lose Gibson.

This team just seems to be in disarray. They don't know when they'll have Rose back, they're trying to dump Carlos Boozer, Asik is gone, and now there is Gibson. What did management do this off-season?

Uh.....yeah. He IS a larger piece of a championship puzzle compared to Asik.....which is what he was being compared to.

Yes.....reading IS fundamental ;-) .

so its 2 mil per year....about 8 mil total- tough call for them-he'd be a bit overpaid at 8, since he's a back up-but 8,9 or 10 mil isnt going to make or break themIf I were management I'd not overpay him and trade him mid-seasonhe doesn't really score and is an energy guy off the bench

I think they are looking to Gibson to be the starting PF next year and play major minutes. In order for this all to work Boozer needs to be gone of course and they need a true SG that they can invest in. Basically offset the scoring of Boozer with a true SG of the future. Therefore you don't need Taj to carry as much scoring as Boozer

4 year $38 million is not bad anymore for these kinds of players. It won't hurt the salary cap like before when players were getting $15-25 million a year for 6-8 years....

Yeah I agree not a bad deal for a defensive PF who can guard SF and PF and most likely starting next year. He is their "Haslem" basically but I think he will be starting next year

Very true. Gibson is the PF of the future for them. For 4 years at 7-8 mil, he is a good fit. Will likely be a double double guy once he gets starter minutes and it won't hold them back from being able to go out and getting a good shooting guard.
