08:12 AM ET 10.30 | Boston opens the season with an indignity of sorts. The Miami Heat will receive their rings and raise a championship banner before tipping off the 2012-13 season against [the Celtics] on Tuesday night. But don't tell Celtics coach Doc Rivers that Miami is opening its title defense against Boston that night. "I never believed that anybody is ever defending a title, because that was last year," Rivers said [Monday]. ... "They don't own the trophy this year. That's what I tell our guys: Miami is defending nothing. They won the title last year. You don't give your trophy back -- that's in boxing, where you get the belt back, that's defending the title. In the NBA, you win a new title. We're trying to win a new title, and they're trying to win a new title."

I suppose it COULD be a combustible situation and if I were so minded I COULD focus on that possibility instead of the possibility that father time might catch up to two of my team's most important players. I COULD do that.

That's a possibility with Kobe. He's not a good people's person with his well chronicled disrespect and clashes with his team mates. He's gotten away with straight up disrespect of Gasol, Bynum, Kwame Brown, Shaq, etc... Dwight and Nash won't let him get away with that... so yes it's possible Kobe's poison attitude wrecks the locker room and a season that could be magical.
Obviously we all hope those ego's have grown and matured to respect themselves and each other as they work together towards a common goal.
Kobe has to treat each of his team mates and coaching staff the same way he wants them to treat him. Else chalk it a lost cause. No team wins without unity of purpose.... therein lies appreciation and respect for the role each member of the team plays?
Can Kobe do it?
