Cubs interested in their lone free agent

08:14 AM ET 10.30 | For the Cubs this offseason, an often complicated process has been made somewhat more straightforward. All eligible players immediately become free agents once the World Series ends, and the only player that fits that description for the Cubs is reliever Shawn Camp. The right-hander was added to the organization toward the end of spring training and ended up leading the pitching staff in appearances with 80. "It's amazing there is only one major-league free agent on the roster," president Theo Epstein said. At age 36, Camp was not only a workhorse, he posted a respectable 3.59 ERA over 77 2/3 innings. ... "We're going to talk to him about a possible return," Epstein said. "I thought he did a real nice job for us."

It doesn't sound like much has changed over there at Wrigleyville.

Theo, take Camp to The Ginger Man, get a round of ciders, and hash it out. Then take Soriano, tie concrete blocks to his feet, and throw him in the Chicago River. It's called the Sicilian Swim.

Hey - he hit 32 dingers and drove in 108. That's a pretty decent year. and yes, we all know he's grossly over paid.

Camp is a journeyman pitcher, so don't go crazy and sign him to a 2 or 3 year deal at his age, one year is good with incentives.

....and there are a few other concerns to be dealt with too.

Nice Photo. Epstein appears quite content with his team's current standing. And hey, no free agents to sign. Life is good.

That photo is Theo's way of showing that he is out standing in his field.

If I was Shawn Camp, I would want to go to a new team that has a potential to win a lot more than 60 games and won't finish last in their division next year.

Agreed. The team payroll is only 56 million, so itisn't like his salary is preventing them from signing free agents or retaining their talented players. The main reason to move him is that he is old and in the way of trying out a rookie outfielder or two. They can keep his bat in the middle of the lineup, or trade him for prospects, there is no urgency either way.

I'd love to see him with the Padres. Maybe a deal that absorbs most of his contract can be arranged. This guy would put the Padres in a very good position

wiseup: I dont remember who came up with war and whip to measure base ball players. what happened to the days when a player was appraised by his performanced on the field and on the mound.

He also scored 69 runs and played the OF like Dave Kingman. He's far from the worst player in baseball, but I'm sure Theo and the Cubs would be ecstatic if he just disappeared.BTW, for those of you who have any interest in WAR, Soriano's career total is pretty close to Marco Scutaro's.

Don't insult insult Dave Kingman like that.
