Simmonds subjected to racist chants overseas

08:35 AM ET 10.30 | Wayne Simmonds, overseas playing hockey, has dealt with quite a bit more than the average NHL player during this lockout. On Sunday, in his third game with [Liberec], Simmonds and his teammates traveled to Chomutov. After a fight with Miroslav Zalesak in the third period, some Chomutov fans began chanting "opice" toward Simmonds. "Opice" translates to "monkey" in English. Simmonds is no stranger to having to deal with racism in hockey. We saw last September when during a preseason game in London, Ontario, a fan tossed a banana peel onto the ice. ... In the aftermath of the chants, both teams released statements condemning the actions of some fans in attendance.

No real surprise here. Some of Europe's premier soccer players are subject to racial taunting and slurs. I read a post on a thread yesterday where someone said that Europe is much more racially charged than the U.S.
THE BISHOP!

Reality check. Not every place on earth is like America or Canada. Everyone who **** about racism over here has no idea what racism is all about until they go visit other countries. And, skin color has little to do with it. If yours is a few shades different from theirs, you are a target. Period.

I'd feel bad for him if he wasn't stealing a job from another man.

Being a lunatic of a soccer fan, and having gone to games in some of Europe's biggest stadiums and their biggest leagues, yeah, they don't hesitate at all to let the bananas and ugly chants fly over there. The worst I ever witnessed was in Spain, and I couldn't understand it because 7 of the home team's starting 11 were black and they were harassing the two black dudes on the other team. Like wtf?

even more so here....know a few who are out of work because of this fiasco...has a tremendous effect on all of us.... losing the potential income from the exhibitions lost and the potential loss off 41 home games creates a lot of bad feelings and creates a big negative economic impact...

So, in Canada they throw banana peels, in Europe they chant racist insults but in the U.S. he's treated like any other player. Things that make you wonder. :)

Most soccer stadiums in Europe are alcohol-free for domestic and continental games.
Of course, pre-game boozing is partaken with the utmost discretion...
