NFL's most accurate kicker to be released

02:15 PM ET 10.30 | The nine-year era of Nate Kaeding is likely over in San Diego. The Chargers placed Kaeding on IR with the minor-injury designation and now that he's passed his physical the team is expected to waive him. If another team claims him, they would be responsible for his salary so he is likely to clear waivers and be released. If he's healthy, he can help a team down the stretch. Kaeding is the most accurate regular season kicker in NFL history with at least 100 attempts.

When your offense can only manage 2 field goals in an entire game against the Browns, then you should set your kicker free to find a real team, and start executing the frront office and the coaching staff. New coach gets the rest of the season to evaluate the existing players, recommend who stays and who goes.

When the cry goes up to fire Norv, just remember that AJ Smith is the genius that created this little nightmare.

in true AJ fasion, blame it on the kicker

in true AJ fasion, blame it on the kicker. I say let's use the kicker to kick AJ out of town. He screwed up what could have been an awesome team. 6 years ago this team was destined for greatness. AJ really screwed that up

The Chargers were a better team when Marty Schottenheimer was coaching but it would be a stretch to say this team was destined for greatness.

He's a playoff choker. Should've gotten rid of him after he blew that game to the Jets in '04

October 30, 2012  04:09 PM ET

I'd take Marty over Norv any day! Marty would have won it all had be been retained. Stupid, stupid, stupid decision. AJ should be fired and Dean should be reassigned. Just a real stupid decision. Did I mention that it was just a real stupid decision.

Accuracy or not, he was never clutch when it mattered and I am happy to see him go. Novak isn't much better but I will never get over how terrible he was in the playoffs.

I???m guessing there will be a lot of house-cleaning in San Diego after the season ends. Kaeding just gets a head-start on finding a new gig.

When the time comes for pink slips, it should be a Smith/Turner package deal.

Turner will find work as an OC in no time. Smith? I hope he enjoys the experience of being a GM, because he won???t be doing that again after the holidays.

No, just shameless self-promotion.
