Angels aggressively shopping pitchers

08:17 AM ET 10.31 | The odds of the Angels making a deal this week seem to be rising quickly. At this point, it will be an upset if they do not. The team, according to major league sources, is aggressively trying to move right-handers Dan Haren and Ervin Santana before deciding on their respective -- and expensive -- club options for 2013. "I think they trade both guys," one rival executive said Tuesday. ... The Royals, Twins, Blue Jays, Padres, Red Sox and Brewers are among the clubs seeking help for their rotations. Such teams might prefer to trade for a Haren or Santana, even on an inflated one-year deal, rather than sign a free agent. The scarcity of quality starters on the open market likely will lead to inflated free-agent prices.

No GM will make that deal on a pitcher with an option left, all they have to do is wait until Friday to sign one of them and not lose a quality prospect.

Nobody is going to pay Santana $13MM after he spent last season serving up homerun balls.

That might actually be a good insight, which suggests that Fox Sports really did talk to someone in the business, and it makes speculation about trades a little more plausible. But I agree with Sulla that Boston doesn't seem too likely.

There has to be something to be gained for the halos,
Plus its reality when the pitchers become free agents their tag would be harder to match
One year deal make sense, if the pitchers fail to pitch to their new team expectations,
Then the team wouldn't' be affected, but if teams decide to sign them as a free agents in the long run could be problems,,,

Let's not forget these two pitchers had a terrible season one served too many home runs and the other one gave too many hits and runs,,, poor outings lead to albatross results,,

One year deal won't hurt, but Doing nothing wouldn't help, remember only who risk deserve to win, just like that :-) :-) :-)

Angels need desperately to add some comssistent pitching into their rotation,
And if this is the only way, then so be it,,,,,

October 31, 2012  12:50 PM ET

Given the strong offenses of both Toronto and Boston, picking up expensive one-year options on Haren and/or Santana isn't actually a bad idea. However, Toronto is moving into a win-now mode, whereas Boston seems to be leaning toward retooling and restocking the farm system.

Obviously the big question is what kind of return would the Angels be looking for? Anything above a mi-range prospect would be too much given the situation. Man, it goes to show how volatile pitching is. Look at some of the most valuable pitchers from 2011:

Ricky Romero, Josh Beckett, Scott Baker, Dan Haren...

October 31, 2012  02:08 PM ET

Prospects are hard to get, but whom should be willing to give top pitching prospects?
The nationals? or the Oakland A's?about the Phillies or rangers? Everything its too difficult to predict!! :-) :-)

October 31, 2012  02:12 PM ET

Angels finally understood, pitching its top priority if NOT just ask the giants for positive results, and ask the Yankees for negative results!!?? :-) :-)

October 31, 2012  02:18 PM ET

The halos need to add quality catcher in order to build a top rotation, angels need to work in defense and offense, but even if the team scores one lonely run in every given game the pitching/ in rotation/ and bullpen needs to be constant and reliable, a dependable rotation is a most, and a bullpen built up at the same level should be available!!?? :-) :-)

Nobody should but somebody desperate would,,,if the halos are willing to trade this guys then get them, why not?at the end the team or teams WHO get them would and could get benefit in a surprisely impression :-) :-) :-)

October 31, 2012  02:34 PM ET

The teams WHO trade for this guys would benefit in either way, let them pitch utill mid-season then trade them for prospects, a change in pitching coach would give a boost to either pitcher,
Example,,, AJ burnnett, Yankees didn't expect him to do soo good in pitsburg I can bet you Yankees regretfully their decission should we blame the player? No, is just the way things workout for every different team,,:-) :-)c

Every team needs pitching, is just every team has a different chemistry, different approach different strategy,,
Some teams have the right school another's have the best patience in how to develope great pitchers, and not just any team can do that,,, angels haven't been able to developed too many good pitchers just a few, perhaps the product has been too thin!!!

October 31, 2012  02:45 PM ET

Angels would need plenty of luck, to get the right players, nothing is easy everything its a challenge in every deal
You either win or lose but can't have both that's for sure!!!

October 31, 2012  02:48 PM ET

Pitching pitching, prospects, or either quality or quantity, what's going to be?? Time would tell!!

October 31, 2012  02:52 PM ET

This coming winter, would be a open window for the halos, they either move forward or backwards, but there will be room for redemption in angels goals Andy achievements, every team could catch a glimpse for better or worse :-) :-) !!??
