USC too thin to discipline fumbling RBs

08:26 AM ET 10.31 | In years past, putting the ball on the ground at USC was an almost automatic ticket to riding some pine. Those were different times, though, back when USC had a stable of four or five talented running backs. Now, depth issues -- largely related to NCAA scholarship sanctions -- limit the coaching staff's ability to use playing time as a punishment. That's an issue for USC, which has had trouble holding onto the ball. ... Coach Lane Kiffin acknowledged Tuesday that USC doesn't use playing time as a discipline tool as much as it used to, because "sometimes there's just no answer to go to." "You still try to teach a lesson," running backs coach Kennedy Polamalu said. "The good thing is, they're good young men. They know."

And, thanks to USC's using the appeals process to stall the recruiting sanctions, the depth issue is only just begining.

I have watched many a USC running back run roughshod over my beloved Irish over the last 30 years (yes, Oldtimer we are comtemporaries). Here's hoping this current group has a couple of fumbles left in them this Thanksgiving weekend...!

Turnovers are not an excuse, it is a fact. USC had 5 turnovers in the Zona loss, but it was the 15 (some very stupid) penalties that really cost them. We all knew that USC has a depth issue and will for a few more years. IMO USC will have a very hard time competing with Oregon the next couple of years.

LOL, good point, but some of those fumbles led to easy TD's by Zona. Not an excuse, but a answer to your question.

Lane is Layla's trophy husband. She pushes him to have a high-profile gig like USCw HC. If he fails, she won't let him wallow. She'll get him up and into the job market quick as an arrow lossed from a compound bow.

It is freaking weird when auto-correct changes "loosed" to "lossed."

I don't know. The lid's going to come off Duck-land pretty soon and that might make a difference. In any case, Troy has a 5-star RB commit in Ty Isaac and a 5-star QB in Max Browne. They do seem to have only one decent sized receiver in Massington, but the OL looks okay. The main problem for all PAC 12 teams competing with Oregon is keeping up with that d amn ed up tempo spread offense. USC's offense has always been pro-style, but that's just not as potent anymore. USC is still the class of the South division and will be as I see it for some time to come. Troy would be better off with another coach, though.
