09:04 AM ET 10.31 | The 2012 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers ended in a clean sweep for the Giants. During the World Series, television records set a new record. Unfortunately for baseball, the record that was set was an all-time low. Per the Los Angeles Times: The four games on Fox averaged a 7.6 rating and 12 share, Nielsen Media Research said Monday. The previous low was an 8.4 for the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies-Tampa Bay Rays and 2010 Giants-Texas Rangers series, which each went five games. Last year's St. Louis Cardinals-Rangers World Series went seven games and built momentum to average a 10.0/16.

The Giants: Larry Holmes. The Tigers: Tex Cobb. Maybe that's why.

this is what sweeps do, no intrigue. The audience was lost after game 2. Still, you gotta give it to the Giants, they deserve their due. No dynasty yet, but if the can win 3 out of 4 could that be considered a dynasty?

The giants swept wasn,'t expected, then again in the day that the giants won their work series
There was a football game between Denver and another team,
When the ESPN asked WHO would have higher rate in the TV
Everybody answer,, the football game was #1 in TV rating :-) :-) :-)

Maybe it's because FOX is a terrible TV venue for the World Series? Their internet black out is ridiculous, and the announcers are atrocious, not to mention the cut-aways to non-baseball people like the Taco Bell VP in the middle of play.

only us real baseball fans were watching.

who doesnt want to hear what some sponsor has to say about his brands exciting partnership with the mlb DURING play?

Who doesnt want to know about the 500$ that corporation X will give to some down-and-out school...meanwhile the company probably paid in the millions to the broadcasting network just to have their brand associated with such noble causes.

I really enjoyed the way the Giants went about business. Great pitching along with timely hitting and defense.

I detect a tad...........maybe two tads.......of sarcasm? And, of course I agree with you 100%.

Maybe it's more the fact that Detroit got swept and didn't give the average fan a sense of drama .. I hate to say it but reality is unless the Yankees are representing the A.L the ratings will always decline . You either love or hate the Yankees and they draw big ratings ,which is exactly why Fox and ESPN shove Yankee games 3 times a week.

October 31, 2012  03:19 PM ET

Maybd if they started the game at a decent time....especially on the weekends...they would have drawn better ratings...game ending at 11-12:00 at night is ridiculous........especially during the week....

That's malarky...you can't say the Yankees are the only draw....the 97 world series between Cleveland and Florida outdrew the Yankees vs Padres in 98....the facts are baseballl is losing its audience ....period

by the way, when will Fox get rid of the pesky, irrelevant Tim McCarver. He throws out dud after dud, it was interesting in the 70's, enlightning in the 80's, kind of insightful in the 90's but his input is just irrelevant in this day and era. He reminds me of a waiter on a date, your into conversation with your date and this pesky waiter keeps interrupting, he thinks its service that he is providing but all he is doing is ruining the ebb and flow of the moment. It's time to turn him out to pasture. His commentary is boring, his attempts to be comedic fall flat. Bring in someone with some actual present day insight...PLEASE. He is the reason I tune out, Buck is a master but McCarver has seen his better days

Buck and McCarver were hard to take, even though the games on the field were interesting. I'm not a fan of either team, but this was an good series, especially with the volume on the TV turned off.

Sgt Schultz is right too, no point in starting so late on the East Coast on the weekends. On weekdays, you have to give the local fans a chance to attend the game, but on the weekends they can start earlier and the fans will get there.

October 31, 2012  03:32 PM ET

......the rangers r the biggest draw on the planet these days and will lead mlb in attendance next yr.....despite the recent struggles.....baseball equivalent of dallas cowboys of the late 60's before brekaing through to dominate the sport for next 30 years......

Both excellent points.

I've heard the suggestion that for he World Series games, they should use the home team's announcers instead of Buck Nasty and Scarecrow McCarver to inject more relevant banter into the game dialogue. Either that, or let Vin Scully do the broadcasts.

True to some degree. Game attendance is up in many places and overall. Could just be a media thing.
