08:19 AM ET 11.01 | Another offseason, another contract distraction for David Ortiz? The gap between what [Ortiz] wants and what the Red Sox have offered could narrow quickly in the coming days, but for now, it's "not very close," according to a major league source. The terms "progress" and "closing in" have been mentioned in reports on the early stages of talks, but unless things happen quickly, Ortiz could be out there in free agency. The Red Sox still appear to be the best bet for the 36-year-old DH, who is seeking a two-year deal somewhere close to the $14.75 million per year he made in 2012 but could settle for less for the same number of years. ... Teams can make qualifying offers to their free agents by 5 p.m. Friday.

I read where Cody Ross plans on testing the market.

I saw that too.

I hope the Red Sox hold firm on what they are willing to pay Ortiz. He's always had an over inflated sense of his own value.

Come to Toronto, bro.

Problem is, when you look at the lineup the Sox currently have, Papi has never had so much leverage. They desperately need his bat. And he and his agent know it.

Papi is a Drama Queen, and loves the attention, plus he thinks he really is worth $14 million/year. Sox need to let this play out, have Papi test FA and find out that his best deal is in Boston; whatever the Sox are willing to pay him it will be much more than any other team.

That's a lot of money for an out of shape one dimensional player...

The man can flat out hit. How many guys can do that? not many.

Yeah, but that's all he does. He can't field worth a damn. There are a limited number of teams who can afford to carry a guy like that and pay him what he wants.

He can hit - in fits and spells. And he's 36 years old, and coming off an injury that had the potential of ending his career. And the Red Sox probably aren't going to be contenders in 2013.

This will just have to play out.

And the National League isn't an option, so half of the available teams are already out of the picture.

Or the Angels. A Middle of the order of Pujols, Ortiz, Trout and Trumbo or Morales could be very dangerous. They move either Trumbo or Morales for pitching to say the Rays.
