08:22 AM ET 11.01 | In the likely event Nick Swisher heads out of the Bronx, who will replace him? Will Torii Hunter be the answer? According to a source, the 37-year-old free agent was not expected to receive a qualifying offer from the Angels before Wednesday's midnight deadline, meaning the Yankees wouldn't have to sacrifice a draft pick if they were to sign the four-time All-Star. The source added that the Yankees are interested in Hunter, a nine-time Gold Glove winner who would add a much-needed righthanded bat to the lineup. Teams are permitted to speak with free agents now, though they can not discuss financial terms until Saturday. Hunter hit .313/.365/.451 with 16 home runs, 92 RBI and 81 runs scored in 140 games with the Angels this past season.

He would have been the third best hitter on the team, after Jeter and Cano, with those numbers.

Fading stars aren't those of the variety who are coming off the best year of their career.

Hunter though makes no sense for the Yankees. No space for him.
Looks like Ichiro is going to resign, then they have both Granderson and Gardner returning. Don't be dumb and waste Gardner on the bench. Also, start Gardner in centre, he is better than Granderson in CF.

He fits a need, and with Swisher gone and Soriano opting out, there is $28 million on the table with more to come. 2 year deal works for me.

And the choices are: Old players that may have a year or two left in them....Or....Young guys who are not ready or not MLB caliber players.

Gardner is a .255 singles hitter who has never hit LH pitching. Steal bases? sure. Good OF? sure. But somehow because he did not play for a year some think he is better than he was. I submit that Dickerson could do what Gardner does, only better.

Just what the Yankees need, another guy closer to 40 than 30. Yes, Hunter had a pretty good year in 2012. But the Yanks need to get younger, not older.

If I were king of the forest, I would send Nunez to Arizona instructional league, teach him to play the OF and put him out there everyday. left or right field.
