Rangers replacing Hamilton with Ortiz?

08:20 AM ET 11.02 | The Boston Red Sox may not be bidding against themselves in the modest David Ortiz derby. The Texas Rangers also have expressed serious interest in Ortiz, major-league sources say, envisioning him as a left-handed hitting replacement for their own free agent, Josh Hamilton. The Red Sox still are considered the favorites to re-sign Ortiz, most likely to a two-year contract. However, free agents can begin signing with new teams once the market opens at midnight Friday. The involvement of the Rangers, and possibly other clubs, likely has increased Ortiz's leverage in his negotiations with the Red Sox. The Rangers' interest, meanwhile, signals a willingness by the team to make significant changes this offseason, particularly if Hamilton departs.

Not a bad choice actually and probably cheaper too. Plus, Ortiz has proven he can hit all season long including the play-offs.

There's been no market for Ortiz for two years. I think the Sox would love to have someone else pay Ortiz's asking price and take the Sox off this public relations hook

This is not a good deal for the Rangers, because it would be more costly to them because you would have to add a second player to play in the field to replace Hamilton.

The Rangers already have a DH in Michael Young and last I looked, Ortiz can't play the outfield. This sounds like a rumor started by Ortiz' agent.

How are your move plans going?

November 2, 2012  09:49 AM ET

I just got informed that need to move another 80 people from out down town facility to this one. And have it done by the end of the 1st quarter of next year. Hooboy!

November 2, 2012  10:07 AM ET

he can't play the outfield so they would have to get an outfielder--how about Swisher and get him off our hands?

November 2, 2012  10:18 AM ET

Let him go if he won't take a reasonable offer from the Sox.
Time to move on.

Josh Hamilton is a lousy outfielder. They both are equally liabilities with a glove. Honestly? Neither one should be allowed to even own a baseball glove.

Oh come on. That's just dumb. Hamilton is a decent defensive outfielder, better suited to right. He has a cannon arm and covers plenty of ground. To equate him to a guy who can't run, throw or catch is just silly.

Go somewhere else, Bro.

Michael Young may have to go back to playing out on the grass.

I can't picture Ortiz being in any other uniform other than Boston's next year.
