[Gary Betttman] has been heavily criticized for his handling of the CBA negotiations and the lockout -- the third during his 19-year tenure as league boss. But Cherry, a critic of Bettman over the years, came to the commissioner's defence. "It's absolutely ridiculous," he said. "[The owners] had a vote at the start ... 30 said yes [to the] lockout. It wasn't Bettman. If they had said no lockout, there wouldn't have been a lockout. He's the guy everybody goes after, it's ridiculous. If 20 owners walked up to him right now and said 'we're going back,' they'd go back."

Everything is so clearly convoluted and divided among both groups right now, it's just not fair to give Bettman a pass. He's failed, again, in his #1 job - to grow hockey. He's failed it for 20 years and they still pay him to be the business face of the game and I cannot effing understand that.

The idea that Bettman had nothing to do with the lockout is a little bit delusional. Part of his job is to advise the owners on how the league should conduct its business.

Don is telling it like it is as always.
The Commish probably has an opinion on the whole thing but for sure he is only the point man for the owners, not the guy who tells the owners what to do.
I don't see him jumping to defend the Commish. Nobody wants Bettman gone more than Don. He is simply stating the facts.
