Jerry Jones: I'll stir things up before fans grow apathetic

09:37 AM ET 11.03 | Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has his decisions questioned publicly probably more than any other owner or GM in the NFL. But Cowboys fans probably wonder who is questioning Jones to his face. Unlike other general managers, Jones answers to himself. Jones doesn't want the Cowboys fan base to think that he's not trying because that could cause them to become one of his worst fears -- disinterested. "As to being criticized, I'm not going to say that I'm used to it, but there have been criticisms since the day that I got involved with the Cowboys," Jones said. "Serious criticism, but that's part of the interest. That's part of having people involved. What you don't want is apathy. And we're not going to have apathy. I promise you that. I'll stir something up before we have apathy. I say that tongue-in-cheek.

"I say that tongue-in-face-lifted-cheek."

Fixed.

Hail to the Redskins!!

There is absolutely nothing he can do now. He has his HC and DC and his roster. The defense is very good. Just let it play out. Any thing he does or says now could only make it worse. The NFC East is still up for grabs and 10 wins most likely takes it.

Very sage. But Jerry won't take such advice and muck it up one way or t'other. It's the Jerry way.

Oh, boy!

Al Davis lives.

Since 1999 the Cowboys have played .500 football. one game over or one game under the whole time. I think their fans know what they have. They are not apathetic, just hopefully realistic and a little fatalistic.

not tongue in cheek; more like HUA

November 3, 2012  10:45 AM ET

That sounds like the strategy for maintaining viewer interest in soap operas or reality shows. Not for building a winning team that can attract and sustain a fan base.

November 3, 2012  10:48 AM ET

Dallas will always have a larde fan base. Worst thing JJ can do if keep losing and they will stay home and watch. They start winning again, the fans will come to the stadium again.

You really want to stir things up Jerry? Hire a legit GM. That will the fans from growing apathetic.

Amazing how he ruin the phrase 'tongue in cheek'.

And yet there are people on here that think he's a shoe-in for the HOF.

Proposed conversation with Jerry:

"Listen, you egomaniac, you have been stirring things up with the Cowboys for years and it hasn't brought you any more championships since Jimmy left.
Why don't you hire a GM who knows the NFL and can make decisions without letting his public image interfere?
If you continue as your own GM this won't even be Texas' team, never mind America's Team. The Texans are lapping you.
Do like most owners and play host in the Owner's Suite, and let the pros do their job."

Any volunteers to have this conversation?

It's gonna take more than a stir to shake the lethargy out of the Cowboys... It's going to take a serious philosophical change in the business model Jerry currently has in place.
