09:59 AM ET 11.03 | Mark McGwire is expected to become the Dodgers' next hitting coach, according to people familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because his hiring hasn't been finalized. An iconic home run champion whose legacy was tainted by steroid use, McGwire was the hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals the last three seasons. The Dodgers' previous hitting coach, Dave Hansen, was fired last month. A move to the Dodgers would mark a homecoming for the 49-year-old McGwire, who graduated from La Verne Damien High and played at USC. He has an off-season home in Orange County.

I didn't see this one coming.
I was skeptical about Mac when the Cards hired him, but I gotta say, the results appear to be in their postseason runs the last couple of years.

As to the steroid comments, I too rolled my eyes when McGwire was hired as by LaRussa, but sure looks like he's a good coach. Steroids won't turn you or me into a MLB player, it makes a ball player with the talent, like McGwire to hit 73 homeruns instead of 40-some. Plus he can speak from experience of the dangers and negative impact steroids can have on a player's health and career. And MLB didn't even have a steroid policy by in the day. So he cheated, yes. But he didn't break any MLB rules at the time.

I didn't like it when LaRussa hired him. He didn't have to pay his dues as a minor league coach. he had zero coaching experience. One more time LaRussa showed why he is a baseball Hall of Fame manager and I'm a baseball commenter on the internet.
I'm sorry to see him go, but I understand wanting to be close to home. Good luck to him.

MLB should make Mac pee in a cup. He is probably still on the 'roids, which could explain why his performance as a coach has exceeded expectations.

Agree with you comment 100%. Except, McGuire hit 70 HR in a season. Fan favorite Barry Bonds hit 73 in a season once.

Hitting coaches don't win pennants. Hitters and pitchers do. And the Dodgers have about 390 miles to go if they're to catch the Giants. All this drooling by Dodger fans about their team's "big trades" last summer (result: Giants gained a total of 10 games on the Dodgers after the trades) and now this. No heart, no plan, a decimated farm system, and a bunch of soulless jocks. That's the "Dodger Way."

Humor, alacran. You should be the last one to talk about crack pipes. You can't write a single grammatically correct sentence.
