08:37 AM ET 11.04 | Josh Hamilton is hoping to find a team to pay him $175 million over seven years, a source told Baseball Prospectus' John Perrotto this week. Hamilton, who hits free agency after spending the last five seasons with the Rangers, is widely viewed as the top position player available, but he could have trouble finding a team willing to invest that kind of cash in him. Though such a deal wouldn't match the length of the contract Albert Pujols secured from the Los Angeles Angels last off-season, it would put Hamilton on par in terms of average annual salary at $25 million.

Who besides the Yankees would be stupid enough to give him that?

easy my man....NY hasn't given out an awful contract in 5 years nowmay want to look towards boston, Washington and anaheim before NY if you want to discuss bad contracts

Jeter's extension was 5 years ago? Russell Martin was signed 2 years ago and made 7.5 mil to hit his weight in 2012. Teixeira signed 4 years ago and after 1 good year has morphed into a veeeery expensive .250 hitter. Swisher was also signed 4 years ago and for $10 mil, I imagine you'd like him to bring a bit more to the table. Brady Granderson has only been in NY for 3 years and at 10 mil per, that .232 BA looks good only next to his strike out numbers.

I don't know.....it seems like what texas wants to give vs what josh wants to earnis really far off.

Stories have been floating around the internet that Nolan Ryan is not a big fan of Hamilton and is very leery of shelling out that much coin for a man with so many personal issues.

That's way too much money for far too long for a 31 year old player with an extensive history of injuries and a propensity to disappear in the playoffs.

The well has been poisoned Texas. Josh will sigh elsewhere

Jeter hit over 300 last year and its a 3 year deal.Martin was on a short and CHEAP deal Tex is a gold glove 1b and is 30 100 every year- swish was traded for as was grandersonYou are reaching.a 40 mil contract for 4 years is not an abortion of a deal that crawford or Werth signed for or arod

7.5 mil for a mediocre at best defensive catcher who hits like Mario Mendoza is not cheap.

Tex is an automatic out in clutch situations and his 30/100 status can be directly attributed to 2 factors; 1. the pathetically short porch in R at Yankee Stadium and 2; a good hitting line-up around means many men on base and his ground outs often drive in a run. he is a shell of the man the signed for 20+ mil

Granderson's contract with Detroit was 5yrs/30 mil so it must have been reworked or extended. The Yankees also picked up the club option for 2013 that pay him 15 million. Ouch.

Swisher was making less than 4 mil with the White Sox, I doubt he came to NY with a contract that escalated to what he made in 2012.

And then of course there's the proverbial elephant standing over there in the corner...this fellow is one bloody mary away from waking up in a subway station with a three day beard. hope it never happens, but its an unfortunate possibility.

QUOTE(#13):

.Grandy came over last year and again a 5 year 30 mil deal for a CF who hits 40 hrs and plays a gold glove caliber OF is a VERY reasonable deal- SURE he strikes out too much and doesn't hit for a high enough average- and his option has been piicked up- yes- for ONE YEAR...not 8

If Granderson had hit for a higher average and struck out less, he would be "worth" (in baseball market terms) at least $10 million per year; he actually was paid $6 million per year, which is pretty much what his skills are worth.

Sometimes it is hard to recall that baseball salaries can't be compared to real-world salaries, and have to be compared to other baseball salaries. Michael Bourne, a guy who has no power and strikes out too much, but who hits for a better average and has speed, got $6.85 million per year. Matt Kemp, a better player, got just over $10 million per year. $6 million for Granderson is about right.

Renewing ARod for 10 more at $28mil trumps all defenses of Yanks bad signings, even if Tex pays huge chunk

The best thing about that signing is that it took the Rangers off the hook for those final 3 seasons.
