07:58 AM ET 11.05 | If timing is everything, perhaps, on paper, the Cowboys and Sean Payton appear to be some kind of match. A report Sunday by ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed that due to proposed clauses in Payton's most recent contract extension, he may not be the coach of the New Orleans Saints when his current Bountygate suspension expires. Which could soon make him a coaching free agent, available to sign with any team, including a team whose ever-antsy 70-year-old owner may soon be looking for a new head coach. That's the speculation, at least. But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who always seems to have ants in his general manager pants, continues to stand by his man, he reaffirmed Sunday. Jason Garrett is head coach of the Cowboys, Jones said unhesitatingly.

Listen...

Jerry Jones is NOT paying Sean Payton the going rate it would take ($8M a season?) to come back here.

The dreaded Jerry Jones Seal of Approval.

Don't worry, Jason. Wade Phillips ended up coaching a big winner in Houston. Don't think of it as losing a head coaching job. Think of it as losing an albatross of an owner.

Looking back, I'm just glad he didn't accept the Ravens' HC position.

November 5, 2012  08:19 AM ET

Jason Garrett is the head coach? I thought is was that long haired goof, because they show him with that Chinese menu in his hands on TV all of the time.

I thought I almost heard JJ say he should fire the GM. Take the keys from grandpa finally!!!

I dont think it could be said any better that that. AMEN

Payton is going to use this little freebie from good ole Rog to get some more money from the Saints and then go back to work. He doesn't want to work for a meddling owner like Jerry Jones and Jerry has already shown that he can't co-exist with a head coach who knows more about football than he does.

November 5, 2012  08:29 AM ET

Please Jerry, just coach the team so you can see you don't know what your doing.

November 5, 2012  08:30 AM ET

Sean Payton will never leave that mawkish fan base in New Orleans.

November 5, 2012  08:35 AM ET

Garrett is not much of a coach. They had a field day rushing Romo without a run game. Play calling in the red zone is where this team lakes ingenuity. No this loss I blame on the coach, he just isn't very inventive.

November 5, 2012  08:35 AM ET

Given their record, the Saints really need to get Sean Payton back.

November 5, 2012  08:41 AM ET

Jerry is going to offer Sean everything and anything.

November 5, 2012  08:41 AM ET

hilarious A few years back Garrett was the prized up and coming football mind . Oh how far has he fallen .. observing this guy for the last few years I am 100 percent convinced Jason is a complete bonehead that is constantly being out coached by the opposition.

And that eliminates him from hiring most of the coaches in the sport.

Add in it would be a dumb move. The cowboys have put together a first class defense and when/if they figure out how to use their offensive weapons, and they have them, everything will change.

I did not know Payton was that good. One superbowl , some high flying offense and always a bad defense and he is the savior? Really? How quickly his post season busts have been forgotten.

It would be...

Jerry did make a good point last night on TV...he said that Garrett is a young coach who is improving while making errors here and there.

Payton on the sideline in Dallas will not fix the oline.

Payton on the sideline in New Orleans will not fix their terrible defense either.

But, Sean will use his leverage to get more dough for sure....bet on it!

Everyone knows that the problem with the Cowboys starts right at the top.

November 5, 2012  09:50 AM ET

The Boys sure could used Demarco Murray the last two games.

November 5, 2012  09:57 AM ET

I fail to see how Jason Carrot is improving, Jeff. I know JJ seems to think he is, but JJ is fooled by a lot of things. There was a questionable call last night, and the announcers said that "Carrot would not challenge it", and he did not, regardless of whether he'd have won it or not. He didn't even try. Maybe that's why JJ is so enamored with Carrot. They both seem to think alike.

I'm not impressed with JJ or Carrot.

Ever notice how Plastic Head always defending somebody---Wade Phillips, Tony Romo. Rob Ryan, Dez Bryant, Jason Garrett...

Never hear of winners defending their team.
