Haren a fit for gambling Boston

08:08 AM ET 11.05 | Depending on just how much risk they'd like to take on, the Red Sox may be players in the free agent pitching market. If the Sox feel like gambling, they could do worse than Dan Haren. The subject of frenzied rumors on Friday before the Angels declined to exercise his option, Haren briefly appeared headed to the Cubs for Carlos Marmol before the deal collapsed. For one year, even at big money, Haren would be fascinating. From 2005-11, he was one of the most durable, consistent pitchers in baseball. ... The Angels clearly fear something is wrong, since they were willing to take on Marmol's onerous contract just to jettison him. But if Haren's healthy, he's one of the best control pitchers in the game and a proven innings eater.

If I am the Sox I think I would think about number 26 of the Cards first coming off a 16-3 season instead of gambling on Haren.

None of this years pitching free agents excite me. Boston would be better off looking to make a trade, with Ellsbury the main piece to obtain a pitcher.

Haren's chronic back problems should be a red flag.

Anybody gambling on Kyle Lousy will have serious buyer's remorse.

Agreed; as the article implies, the Angels must have a reason not to re-sign him.
They would probably know more than the Sox about Haren's physical issues.

The Sox are going to have to give up a lot more than Ellsbury if they are looking for a front line starter.

I disagree, the Sox should be able to get a pretty decent pitcher for Ellsbury and a mid level prospect.. A #1, no but a #2 or solid #3 should be doable.

I think they expect to get a middle of the order starter, not a front liner...I agree with you, Ellsbury isn't going to get you an ace.

The only issue I have with that is that who ever obtains Ellsbury in a trade may lose him to free agency after one season. I would think that the Red Sox have to sweeten the deal by adding a pitching prospect in order to receive a middle of the rotation starter in return.

He was just a shadow of that player in 2012 and his ability to stay healthy is always a concern

The main question concerning Ellsbury as a FA should be whether he can he replicate that 2011 season, or was it all just an anomaly.
