Let the Shields speculation begin

08:08 AM ET 11.05 | Rays righty James Shields takes solace in the fact Tampa Bay is built, like this season's World Series champs, on pitching and defense. "Hopefully we'll continue to do that, add some bats, and do what they did this year." Of course, it's not that simple. ... Whether it's the Dodgers, who were a hot topic last week, or the Angels, Rangers, Royals (who do have several interesting young hitters) or whomever, Shields is ready for another winter of trade rumors. "Obviously my name's been thrown around a lot," he said. "I'm just going to go about my business and not really worry about it. Obviously I want to be a Ray. I've been here 12 years, this is my home. If it does happen, it'll be a sad day."

Trade him while his value is at peak, Tampa. However, I'm unsure of how many top prospects the Dodgers have after trading for all of those big contract players.

They better trade this guy he still valuable and can be a difference maker in another division.

If you are traded or you stay James, you deserve a major salute for staying with the same team for so long.

Tampa could get more in return by trading one of their younger less expensive pitchers.

I think the Rays would like to keep their payroll down meaning it would be more likely for them to give up a veteran like Shields.

IF the rays are thinking in adding a extra bat to their lineup, IF the rays are in need of a first baseman, the angels could help them and both teams would get benefit from this trade,,,,

the halos have mark trumbo,,he is young and cheap plus has a good stats in his first two seasons in the majors, he plays first baseman his originally spot, but he can be used at the OF as well,

kemdris morales is another first baseman, but this player would cost too much for the rays as a trade bait could be cheap but his tag is a bit hefty,,,

November 5, 2012  11:45 AM ET

best thing is try to trade james shield and a rookie pitcher ARCHER for trumbo the halos would have to pay for shields remaining contract but archer would come as a cheap player without a hefty contract,, the same goes for the rays trumbo is cheap at the minimum salary 400k !!

sure, they have alex cobb alex torres lefty, chris archer lefty, but would they trade all this 3 starters for a bat? say mark trumbo?? i think the rays would refuse to pull this type of a trade,,,

but james shields and chris archer for mark trumbo makes alot of sense, the rays wouldn't get a hefty salary in return and a very good offensive player with two different positions, as a outfielder and as a first baseman and who knows he may be able to play third baseman as well!!eventually,,,

Why would he want to go back to playing in front of 5 to 10k people and no chance of winning a title?

Can't argue with the crowd argument, but the Rays have been pretty successful the last several years in the win column.

I just don't see them making the World Series any time soon. Just my opinion. I just see too many other teams standing in their way. Teams with more resources, more fan support and more on the field.

Shields to KC makes a lot of sense. The Royals have a lot of young hitters to deal, and the Rays need offense. Too, Big Game James is an ace...which the Royals need desperately.

Shields and Archer to KC for Alex Gordon and Hosmer?

November 5, 2012  05:50 PM ET

Shields for Trumbo? Perhaps.

November 5, 2012  05:51 PM ET

Shields to the Rangers for Nelson Cruz?
