Did WVU use minority candidate?

One month later, Calvin Magee's emotions remain jumbled. He still feels angered because of a Dec. 21 request by the West Virginia athletic director that he become a meaningless minority candidate. That, Magee said, was apparently so administrators could mollify the Black Coaches association director who hours earlier inquired why the Mountaineers hadn't interviewed any minority members, such as him. He still feels mistreated because someone from the university's Legal Counsel came to his Puskar Center door Dec. 19 and, wielding a warrant-like letter, confiscated his cell phone and West Virginia office materials. He still feels upset that his seven years of West Virginia service seemingly amounted to little in the end, when, he said, he was never asked to remain as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He still feels gratified by West Virginia fans who, as he put it, were the only adults who asked him to stay.

Wow, WVU shows itself to be the definition of class yet again. Rich obviously knew what was best for him.

January 20, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Why does race alway pop-up it's ugly head all the time? Why can't we just look at the person and not his skin color.

January 20, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Ask the "Black Coaches Association".

January 20, 2008  11:33 AM ET

CanadaFootball...If there was anything to it, then the real question is why did not Michigan interview and give him the heads coaching job?..Once again Michigan showed itself to be classless..Your thought would apply to every team out there that did not interview and give him a job....Wait until the first time Michigan does not produce in a big game offensively and see what their fans say..

January 20, 2008  11:36 AM ET

If he really wanted to be considered for the head coaching position why did he go to Ann Arbor and get introduced with Rich Rod at the first press conference. I would take that to mean that you would rather be in Ann Arbor than Morgantown. I would think you would wait and state your interest public for the job. Also if you felt you were discriminated against would you go back and work for that same university in the bowl game. It's a little fishy to me that this comes out through Rich's agent after all of the accusations that WVU was trying to smear him.....Why wait so long......It's a sad sad attempt to get back at the university.....

People do tings that they later regret and sometimes people need to justify their actions. I am talking about both Magee and about the WV athletic Department. I don;t know much about Magee, but I have seen plenty from the WV athletic department and they stink.

January 20, 2008  02:54 PM ET

Calvin Magee is in a better place...and I hate Michigan.

January 20, 2008  03:34 PM ET

It was announced during the Fiesta Bowl that Magee was going to Michigan with Rich Rod, and several of the other coaches on the staff. All together there was reported that seven coaches off WVU's staff were on ther way to Michigan with Rich Rod.

January 20, 2008  05:42 PM ET

This is why this policy doesn't work. If a team wants a guy, why waste the time of some other guy that they have no interest in. If a program thinks that one coach will make them win, they will hire him no matter if him landed in an UFO in the parking lot and has 3 eyes.

January 20, 2008  06:16 PM ET

WVU fans were attacking Rodriguez for a lack of class, respect, etc. And right in their own backyard WVU officials lacked the same in their treatment of Calvin Magee. White America just doesn't get it. It's 2008, and we're still in 1948 ideals collectively. Here's another example, as are some of the comments right here above. Truly sad.

January 20, 2008  06:35 PM ET

East Coast Keith you make no sense......read all of the fact before you make a comment. Look at the timeline.....Rich met with Michigan officials on Friday, discussed the job with WVU all day Saturday, to see if they would match the offer. Then Sunday @1 meeting with team, 4pm Rich resigns, and at 5 pm Rich and Magee are on a plane to Ann Arbor. So from the official 1pm announcemnt that Rich was leaving and the 5pm flight to Ann Arbor. When was this meeting that Magee had with WVU officials....And I still go back to why did it take so long to come out.....You don't think Rich's agent has any other motives by putting this info out there.....Think about it.......

JohnnyV: my comments have zero to do with Rich Rodriguez. They are a reaction to the fact that yet another minority figure was treated like pond scum in the process to hire a new coach (a notion I assume you disagree with, so be it) and some of the comments above regarding this scenario. I think you can figure out which comments I'm talking about. It's amazing here how people deny racism with tags like "you make no sense", "you are clueless", etc. Again, this country is in a sad, sad state with our denials about the existence of racism against our minorities be it in sports or anywhere else in society.

January 20, 2008  08:00 PM ET

The fact that there is a requirement to interview a minority figure is absurd. If you are the guy for the job you are going to get the interview, regardless of your skin color. How many white coaches get interviews at schools like Grambling or Florida A&M? Is there a requirement that says a white coach has to be interviewed? Racism is a two way street so don't throw this garbage on "White America". The last time I checked there wasn't a "White Coaches Association." I am sure that any black coach would much rather get an invite for an interview based on his ability to lead young men and not to meet a requirement. Getting an interview to meet this requiement is more of a slap in the face than not getting an interview at all.

Another lie by Rich's Posse. That dude is so full of himself. He's dirty and we don't want that idiot any ways. Calvin would not be a good coach regardless of Color. He blew two games this year and both shoulda been easy wins. Check the play calling in those two losses. Pitiful. Enjoy your life in Michigan. You will both be in IAA in four years.

A few comments.

First, in regards to the hiring of the head coach. Why is race an issue? Look at the number of minority head coaches? How many of the 119 (120 if you include WKU) have minority head coaches? I think i heard 6 minority head coaches are coaching d1A football. Are you telling me that there are not more than 5 minorities that are capable of coaching at the top levels of college football.

Second, in regards to the Rich Rod-WVU garbage. I think both sides are acting like babies in a public smear campaign against each other. They both need to grow up.

In my opinion, WVU is getting exactly what they deserve. They are acting like immature idiots and are getting what they deserve. that is a Reputation of being whiners and crybabies.

50yearfan... Michigan classless??? You obviously have been in a comma the past lifetime. What next the Pope isnt catholic? You ever hear about michigan players in academic scandals like all those dummies who cant even spell their name down at FSU. You can get into florida with like a 1.5 GPA, barely under legal retardation. Or OSU's backup QB gets busted picking up a prostitute. Or maybe Bobby petrino quitting halfway through the season is classless. BUT NOT MICHIGAN. You sound like a Florida dropout with your ignorant comments

January 20, 2008  10:37 PM ET

Ha Ha Ha! Booo hoooo! Just a bunch of cry babies.

EastCoastKeith, move if you don't like the U.S. A school should hire any coach they want! NOT give some joker a job because of his skin color. I'm all for more minority coaches, as long as they deserve it. See Navy. Or Houston.

I agree if he wanted the job, he should not have gone to meatchicken I mean michigan.

January 20, 2008  11:54 PM ET

Man, it's so funny how few outside of this state have no clue! He wasn't asked to stay because when R2 announced, er boalted, he sais he was leaving with him. R2 already had five or six assistants coming with him, and Calvin was one of them.

I would like to thank Coach Magee for returning to the University, asking the admin for approval to coach his hids in the Fiesta Bowl (which they gladly said yes).
Also for asking the kids if they would mind, and they were happy! He is a class guy, i have no clue why the race card is being pulled.
