Payton to a different NFC East team?

08:05 AM ET 11.06 | Not only are there all manner of reasons to tie Sean Payton to the Cowboys, but also to disconnect the two parties -- beginning with this being a land of opportunities for the coach. I'm sure Payton could get the best out of [Tony Romo] if anyone could. But consider a better alternative in the NFC East alone. If Washington continues to founder, Danny Snyder might be inclined to trade Mike Shanahan for Payton. ... None of this is to say that Payton wouldn't want to coach in Dallas. But why limit himself to the Cowboys when he could conceivably resurrect Philip Rivers' career in San Diego? Or finally realize the offensive potential in Detroit? Or work for an Eagles owner who has demonstrated uncommon loyalty to his head coach?

He won't be in Dallas. JJ will do the least desirable thing and extend Garrett's contract.

It's some mad people down in New Orleans right now.

Goodell may want to avoid those fools.

If Sean Payton wouldn't work for JJ, why would he work for Danny Boy?

Stay in New Orleans, Sean. Don't mess with the voodoo man.

November 6, 2012  09:13 AM ET

Return To New Orleans...............

November 6, 2012  09:13 AM ET

Can you believe the bias and hatred Roger Goodell has for New Orleans and The Saints. For example:
Payton was suspended for the season by the NFL for his role in the bounty scandal. The league has taken issue with a clause in the contract extension he agreed to MORE THAN A YEAR AGO , which was to have kept him in New Orleans through 2015. Gawd, Roger it took you more than a year to determine there was a problem with a contract. You are a vile man. As to vile, you stand 3rd behind a certain standing president and VP or some country that I love.
You don't belong being the commissioner of the NFL. Never did belong in that job.

November 6, 2012  09:19 AM ET

As Michael Lombardi noted this morning... he and the Saints already have the money worked out. I believe this pretty much comes down to whether he wants to stay in New Orleans or not.

I will be shocked if he leaves - he has verything he could possibly want.

Money...
Power...
Fan adoration...
The media hates him because he won't kiss their arces...

He's not going anywhere.

Robataille, if you don't know someone in New Orleans don't judge them. SI does not like personal attacks. Well, I live in the area and take that as a personal attack. So SI show some guts and let this stand sans getting one banned. If so, then ban us both.
You, Robataille, are probably as vile a person as that standing president and VP that resides in your area. Sure all people there are not like the three of you. Hope God helps you turn your life around. It's people like you that were glad when the area was ravaged by Hurricane KATRINA. For your information these people you call fools feel for the people in the Northeast ravaged by Hurricane SANDY and doing what they can to assist those in need. That is the type of people who live down here.

Why would he walk away from Brees? Payton just has theories, It is Brees who makes it work. As Jeff Davis said of the Confederacy, " It died of a theory."

November 6, 2012  09:25 AM ET

One problem. None of these teams have Drew Brees. You can't turn Mr. Ed into Secretariat.

I am not sold on letting Garrett go.

Dallas a season ago was in dire need of talent on defense.

They did that. They hit on Sean Lee and Claiborne in the draft and signed Brandon Carr.

Unfortunately, they could not improve the o-line at the same time and settled for Bernadeau and Livings which have under-performed...as well as going with Ogletree.

As more cap money is available next season, Garrett will have 1 more year to improve those positions listed, as well as see if Doug Free is worth keeping.

Once Dallas has done that, and is still a 7-9 or 8-8 team, then and only then would JG need to go.

Sean Payton would be a fantastic hire for sure, assuming we kept Rob Ryan but I do not think Sean would get us over the hump without the players needed.

I may be wrong here... but I thought he was pretty sympathetic for you guys. The term "fool" is hardly perjorative in the context of his comment.

Chill out, Bro.

I think that this is really a non-issue that has been carried to far by the media. There's no good reason for him to leave the SAINTS!

Couldn't agree more...

Jason Garrett needs to go, i keep hearing about the O-Line, but we've handed a number of games away this year and the offesive line isn't responsible for beating yourself, which the cowboys did against Baltimore and the Giants and that's all coaching. dallas has a ton of talent, but that talent has to matched with proven top coaching talent, when they put a SB winning coach in place with this talent, they will be hard to stop. Top coaching wins you games you should lose, all the cowboys do is lose games they should win.

Handed a number of games away?

Last I looked, the Baltimore game was all about Dallas running 1 more play. Who knows if that play would have netted enough yards to get Bailey in range to hit?

Bailey still could have missed that FG too.

The Giant game was all about turnovers, period. That is not Garrett's fault when they turn over the ball 5 times.

You are right, top coaching wins games you should lose, but talent makes coaching look better too. In the end, if Romo is running for his life and there is no run game to stop, it makes Dallas a 1 dimensional team and easier to blitz and defend.

Fix the line and lets see what happens.
