08:13 AM ET 11.06 | Which team will win the rights to negotiate with Hanwha Eagles star Ryu Hyun-Jin? Signs of [Ryu's] entry to the Major League Baseball are palpable since the 25-year-old became available for a move via the posting system on Nov. 2. The bidding will end Friday at 7 a.m. Although specific names of bidders and numbers remain unknown, some major teams have requested Ryu's pitch-tracking data from Sports2i, the Korea Baseball Organization's (KBO) official data provider, in an obvious attempt to size up the southpaw. ... According to the official, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers have requested the information, while the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians already paid for it.

This off season is getting off to a better start - T&R isn't saying that the Jays are in on EVERYTHING.

What has the world of baseball come to when you have to pay just to have the signing rights to Japanese players.

He's Korean, but the system works the same. The teams own the players, not quite like the MLB did before Curt Flood sued and won, but closer to that model. Also, you know how small market teams feel about the Yankees (and others) just swooping in and taking all their talent, and that is sort of how the Japanese and Koreans feel about the US signing their top players. The teams would rather develop their own players and league, and the fans would like to see the top players at home, so they make it really expensive to acquire players.

It must be a difficult transition for these guys. Differences in culture, language, training, coaching. They should just stay home.

I think the A's and their signing of Yoenis Cespedes, plus the Yu Darvish sweepstakes in Texas, shows that these mini-auctions can be worthwhile. Let the bids begin.
