12:25 PM ET 11.06 | The New Orleans Saints and coach Sean Payton are allowed to negotiate a contract extension right now, according to the Times-Picayune. Payton had his contract, which was scheduled to run through the 2015 season, voided by the NFL on Sunday. With the news that Payton was free to sign anywhere after the season, speculation was that the Dallas Cowboys would court the Super Bowl-winning coach. But early signs indicate the Saints will have plenty of time to re-do his contract so he can remain in New Orleans.

I don't think there is any doubt that Payton will want to stay with NO, but there was a specific clause that the league didn't like (allowing Payton to become a FA if gm Loomis got fired). So now they have to have do-overs on the negotiation process.

Strange that Payton doesn't seem to have incurred the same damage to his reputation as Gregg Williams has.

We'd love him here.... my bet is he's going to see what offers come up before inking a deal with any team. Given this has happened and your demand to other potential teams, why would he not test the market? He'd be crazy not to listen to other teams.... and he does have a home in Dallas so obviously he has connections here.

Payton didn't narc off Vilma and the rest, and he has pretty much kept his mouth shut and done his time.
