How SMU lured Jones to Dallas

Posted: Sunday January 20, 2008 10:11AM ET

June Jones and SMU athletic director Steve Orsini talked at length about "fit" before Jones became the school's new football coach almost two weeks ago. "On the surface, June, Hawaii really fit you like a glove," Orsini recounted. "Hawaii doesn't fit in any part of Dallas, Texas." But Jones convinced Orsini he and his approach to rebuilding football programs -- one uniquely his own -- is adaptable and will succeed on the Hilltop, just as it did on the islands. The approach is drawn from a life "amazing, diverse and colorful," as Orsini put it. It is a mix of devotion to putting players first, a personal spiritual motivation and an unrivaled understanding of X's and O's -- and the Run and Shoot offense. Jones carries a calmness, yet an intensity and unshakable confidence as he begins implementing his plan, which embraces being different from the norm.

It's Not!

I was going to go with hookers, but that's plausable (sp?) as well.

I go with a suitcase full of unmarked bills and three oil wells?

Bring in the clown(s)!!! We need some authentic lugubriousness here.

Almost right, Irish. The right answer is, of course, co-ed hookers.

Report Offensive Comment

Gee, just how would you convince someone to take a different job...Hmmm...Ah yes, throw a crapload of money at them.

I've been looking at going to SMU for college. But that 1-11 football season isn't looking good.

All it would have taken is a few bars of soap and a new camcorder.

From the Pony Express to the Midnight Express....good luck June.

The SMU legacy continues.

Jones can't be that bad of a guy when he offers to take a pay cut in exchange for the facilities being improved.

Jones leaving Hawaii was almost all the AD's and schools fault. Jones gave them a winning program with a chance to become a top level school and they blew it by not upgrading the facilities to compete on a high level.I cannot fault Jones at all. I hope he builds SMU back into a top level program like they were in the early 80's except with out all of the cheating and scandals. There are plenty of recruits in Texas and in other close states who would love to play for a guy like June Jones and get a top level education like SMU provides.......ok maybe some of them might like that education but they would all like to play in Jones high powered offense.

Dear SMU
I cannot express to you how much you have gained in Coach Junes Jones.
As a Christian he is an outstanding example of the servant. What he did for us in Hawaii can never be taken away or forgotten. He will do the same for SMU, and resotre it's football heritage. He is an evangelist, and players with a spiritual core and a belief in God will gravitate toward him. I graduated from St. Louis High School in Honolulu, a Catholic High School with unparalleled success in football, basketball and academics. June was able to attract many top local graduates from Christian Schools like St. Louis, Iolani, Punahou, Maryknoll and Mid Pacific Institute to play for him. For many it was passing up bigger schools on the mainland. But having a coach of his caliber and spirituality gave them the father, big brother and Christian disciple that many of them needed and wanted. I predict June will cast a wide net in Texas and surrounding areas and attract a huge talent base from families that want their sons to be focused on God, academics and then football. Coach Jones will graduate all of his players if they truly have their priorities straight. Some will opt out for the NFL, but that is what he can do to showcase their talent too.
In the end, SMU will do exceedingly well. They will bring back the luster of a winner and a program witrh integrity for graduating great young men. So count your blessings, because June Junes is your new savior. He will produce greats like Eric Dickerson and Don Meredith once again. This is a Hawaii football fan that will be tuning in on SMU football next season because I want to watch another miracle as it happens in Texas.
Aloha,
Major Mike

I hear Ginger Lynn still performs at Dallas clubs. Maybe Orsini used her to "charm" June. Hee hee.

Seriously, let's hope Coach Jones succeeds in Dallas. However, he needs to temper his goals with mixing with boosters, which got SMU the death penalty in the first place. Once SMU gets a taste of success, they could easily go back to being a football factory again.
