03:21 PM ET 11.06 | The SEC's spent much of the past two years trying to figure out how to squeeze two new teams into an eight-game schedule, preserve rivalries, ensure everybody gets a satisfactory number of home games, and keep strength of schedule flexible. But new realities for college football might make that harder and harder, and commish Mike Slive's now sounding just a little bit more open to the idea.

It is good for the fans and extra tv money to play an extra conference game, but on the dark side of it you need these lesser games to get bowl eligible to make extra money in the bowl season for the conference.

It is a catch-22 for them. The extra conference game can help teams get into the new playoff system as it is not an extra game against Buggtussle Junior College, but it as you state it may cause one team or two to miss out on a potential bowl game. The one thing I do like about the B12 is hey they play everyone right now and it is 9 games. Yes Kansas is a creampuff at the moment but they are not that far removed from the Manginopizzabuffeteater and an Orange Bowl trip.

One more game on the schedule but you cant have a true playoff system? I remember when 12 games included the bowl game.

The arithmetic is simple, the larger the conference, the more conference games you will play. At 14 teams, the SEC and the ACC should seriously consider a 10 game conference schedule.

Just means most of them want us twice, LSU even asked for a best of three series with us each year. Wonder why this would be.

It's not one more game....it is changing one OOC to an InConference.

obviously, the SEC has to maintain its superiority, so they play more games against themselves so the argument remains "look how deep/great/awesome we are" and still leave enough room for cupcakes too.

B1G might be right behind em. There has been talk that if they did it then we would too.

I think we should be at 9 games in the B1G. 5 against divisional rivals, 2 against annual inter-division rivals, and the other 2 against the remainder of the other division. That way, you would play most teams in the conference every year, and 4 teams twice in 4 years. If Delaney can get the AD's and coaches to stop crying about 4 home vs 5 away games every other year, this might get done. If it does, I hope the B1G makes Whiskey vs Sparty an annual inter-division game.

You hit it right here DS. No one wants to give up the friendly confines of home...even if they get it back the next year.

Every conference has creampuffs, so it doesn't change much except you might be playing one of your tougher games a week earlier, but then again, it cuts both ways for each team ( unless you're the Gumps)....

Well...when half the conference is ranked....yes.
So once the B1G goes to 9 games, you will use the same argument? Just kidding....

The bigger question is "How to reduce these cupcake games?". One solution is for the BCS to require that each BCS team to play 2 games a year versus another BCS team from a different conference for their OOC games in order to be bowl eligible.
