The most coveted free agent coach in NFL history

08:00 AM ET 11.07 | Sean Payton continues to look smarter by the day. Before his suspension he helped the Saints pick his coaching replacement for the 2012 season, and he screwed up the process so much that the Saints went into the dumper. ... But Payton is smarter even than that. He has manipulated events so thoroughly that a return to the Saints as the conquering hero, which looked to be his end game back in April, has become an afterthought. It could still happen, sure -- but that has become the least of his options. Unless Roger Goodell pulls another Roger Goodell and smites Sean Payton for the [heck] of it, Payton is about to become the most coveted, most expensive free agent coach in NFL history.

All the teams that should be looking for a new HC right now are train wrecks for other reasons - ownership or players, which also means the GM. Why would a guy take on a "challenge" like that?
Instead of teams like the Skins or Cowboys, think more like Cleveland or Jacksonville, teams that have recently undergone changes of ownership that might give Payton complete control over the team instead of asking him to fit in with a bunch of bozos.

Nah. He's staying in New Orleans.

agreed. There's only one Drew Brees and he does not play in Washington.
That said, Payton is about to cash in.

My conspiracy theory for the day:
Das Commisar, realizing that he has probably overextended his authority with his punishments over BountyGate tells Peyton that he will void his contract if Peyton just keeps his mouth shut and accepts the penalties. Once the contract is voided, Peyton is 'forced' into the open market and can entertain offers from other teams as well as New Orleans. The bet at the time was that at least one routinely underachieving team with a good QB (Dallas or San Diego) will tank again this year and the owner will be under tremendous pressure for having stuck it out with suspect head coaches and will need to make a bold move.
Let the bidding war begin!

He's been punished enough.
Canuck eh?

He's not going anywhere. Certainly not to a team with a meddlesome owner who thinks he's a GM.

Why would Payton want to work for that control freak? And downgrade from Brees to Romo? He'll get a nice raise from Norleans.

Payton and the Saints should just redo the same extension they had already submitted to league, minus the language about Payton having the right to walk if Loomis leaves that got the contract sunk in the first place, and get it signed. Minimize the drama as much as possible.

Agreed. I think they wanted to keep it secret for just that reason (minimizing drama) but the story leaked. I wish I worked for an NFL front office, so I could get free drinks in exchange for leaking stuff!

this isn't up to Sean Peyton, Jerry Jones or Tom Benson. It is up to Mrs. Peyton. If she wants him home in Dallas with the kids, he will coach the Cowboys. If she doesn't, he'll stay with New Orleans.
