Steelers shaking up backfield

08:01 AM ET 11.08 | With two hot running backs, what's a coach to do? Isaac Redman may have the answer. Put them both back there. The Steelers installed a counter play that involved Redman and fullback Will Johnson last week. Redman initially thought it was for two halfbacks. "We had a split backfield with me and the fullback, Will Johnson, and we were running that cross, and he was cutting off the end," Redman said. "He would get the carry if it was called for him. I was thinking, maybe we could have two tailbacks back there at the same time." Radical idea, two tailbacks in the same backfield? ... "We did a lot of it" in training camp, Redman said. "I'm surprised we haven't done more, but everybody's been banged up."

Isaac Redman suggests the idea of two tailbacks on the field at once. How, exactly, do you get "Steelers Shaking Up Backfield" from that?
I guess that's the state of modern journalism.

If the Steelers continue to play like they have been, they are going to shake up the AFC.

The fourth quarter last Sunday was the way football should be played.
Keep that up and Baltimore will have to settle for a wild card this year.

Yeah, it sure was. I just wish they hadn't decided to start playing it against my Giants.

2 tailbacks in the backfield at the same time and that's a "radical" idea?
am i missing something or isn't that the old pro set backfield?
or to be pro set do you need to have one of the backs be a FB?

If the Steelers can get all three backs healthy, they should have fresh legs in the 4th quarter when everyone else is getting worn down. And we'll see more games like the one against the Giants.

Didn't Franco Harris & Rockey Bleier both rush for a 1,000 one year?

You mean, back in the 1970's, before the changes that increased passing in games? Yes. Yes they did.

Frenchy Fuqua was the man. He had special platform shoes made that had goldfish in the heels. Miss him.

Well, that was also probably before Redman was born, so to him it would seem like a radical idea. Reporters are like goldfish; if they get back to the front of the tank, they think it is brand new because they don't recall having been there before.

The Steelers probably can't afford to have two tailbacks in the game at the same time, both exposed to injury

I know, I was just about to post the same thing...the old Packers, Bears....not a new concept. How long have Veer, Wishbone, Split formations been around?
The old Pro Set was a HB and FB. Years ago, FBs were just HBs playing that position (as in the Packers and Bears I was talking about)
Then again, neither is anything else...running QBs (Tarkenton)...they were running the "Wildcat" in Knute Rockne's time as a Single Wing.
I think the only innovation in the last number of years has been on the other side of the ball, to be honest.

There's a good example...though technically Bleier played the FB position. But a lot of FB's were like that....Taylor, Csonka...even Brown played some FB

Earnest Byner and Kevin Mack did so as well with the Browns back in the 80's.

The key, I believe, is that they continue to have continuity on the Oline. If those guys stay healthy they will get better and better and we'll have "Steelers" football back full-time.

Actually, Franco Harris was the fullback. 'Course, that was in the old days, when fullbacks were allowed to actually run with the ball instead of just blocking.
