Is Derrick Williams a bust?

08:08 AM ET 11.08 | At the very least, Derrick Williams, after two impressive college seasons at Arizona that haven't yet translated to the NBA, now has a chance to shed the label. Unfortunately [as a rookie], Williams was stuck behind soon to be two-time All-Star Kevin Love so the minutes available at his natural power forward position during his rookie season were going to be slim. This season, however, Love broke his hand in a freak preseason accident. ... After three regular season games, the breakout has yet to happen for Williams and fourth-year forward Dante Cunningham has been outplaying him coming off of the bench. It isn't all negative for the former number two overall draft pick, but he just hasn't been taking advantage of his opportunities.

Dante Cunningham is very good bench player. Lots of energy and can play D as well. That is something you either have or don't, and apparently Williams doesnt

Either You Have It Or You Don't, Bro.

I think it's the system he's in as well as the fact he's backing up K-Love... If he was on a team like Phoenix, Golden State, Philly he'd play better... Plus the lack of minutes can be killer on a younger players confidence in this league...

LOL. You guys on the east coast know they do play basketball outside of the atlantic seaboard dont you? As for Williams, he plays in Minnesota which is a state in the union of the country where you reside (in the very north central of the country). Too early to tell on him right now though. I think he does need a defined position though (as JGB mentioned). He can look very good at times and very lost at times as well. I think he will get better and eventually become very solid. He works hard and is no slacker so it looks like it may be a confidence issue. Time will tell.

Where are all the posters who said the Cavs were dumb for taking Irving instead of Williams?

Longtime.. i was one of them and, I was wrong. I still like Williams but think is on the wrong team. Kyree has exceeded my expectations and them some.

so the guy basically hasnt played for over a year and "after 3 games" (playing for minnesota i might add) he is being judged a bust?

Although he has not lived up to the hype I never blame the player, but the team that drafted him. Might not be a good fit. No one seems to think about how parts will work together, they just accumulate a bunch of stars and think that will spell Championship. When Kevin Love has been given the green light to do his thing and Ricky Rubio isn't available, well, there you go.

Williams needs to step up while he has the chance to start. If he can't step up and at least put up double figures then there's a possibility he will be a bust. I'm sure he will get traded or released down the road and get another shot with another team (ala Adam Morrison). If he puts up the same numbers with a second team then he mind as well start brushing up on his Italian. BTW....I did pick him up for my fantasy team and released him within a week. Hope he proves me wrong.
