Frankly, the perfect move for the Rangers is one that they probably cannot make: trading for Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer. ... Mauer, though, would be a perfect fit for the Rangers, filling their biggest positional need as well as their need for a No. 3 hitter to replace Hamilton. As it stands, the team is investigating any and all free-agent catchers, including Russell Martin and A.J. Pierzynski. The Rangers??? need at the position will exist even if they re-sign Mike Napoli, who is more of a hybrid than a pure catcher.

I think Minnesota said something about listening to offers for anyone, but I expect the offer for Mauer would have to be pretty good. The fans like him and he has something left in the tank.

Isn't that the question--does he have much left in the tank?
His days as a catcher are numbered, with knees and a back that are failing.
His power hitting numbers seem to be declining, and he appears to be more injury-prone as he ages.
At the price the Twins would want, he's a decided gamble. Great player in his prime, which may be behind him.

knees and back are failing really?? He played in 147 games this past year majority at catcher with them giving him breaks at 1B.

Understood, but over the past three years hasn't he missed large portions of seasons with knee and back issues?
I'm not saying he's done, but he is declining and not worth a huge price in a trade.

still hit well over 300 and was solid behind the plate. Yaa catching took a toll on him and his power numbers. He seemed healthy this year and i guarantee alot of teams would be willing to give up ALOT to grab mauer. put it this way teams would be more hesitant with morneau then mauer i think.

I know a sure way to test that theory: send him to Philly. If he can't hit for power there, then his power is gone.

"power hitting numbers seem to be declining"?????????? He never really hit for much power. Excluding his MVP season, Mauer has hit over 10 homers once (13 in 2006). His doubles etc. are pretty close to his career average. He isn't in much decline, he just never had much power. But I agree he will never play more than half the games at catcher ever again.

His SLG% was in decline from 2009-2011, but came back up last year. Next year will tell the tale if that was a fluke trend.

He only played 74 games at C this year and only 52 last year, so clearly he's not an everyday C anymore. His power numbers have declined, the fact that his back has bothered him the last few years reminds me of another player who had an amazing five year run and then became a very good - but hardly great player. Don Mattingly. Once the back goes - you're never quite right. So no, teams aren't going to unload their farm systems for a C with dwindling power numbers who doesn't catch everyday and who is still owed almost $140M.
