The odd man out in Pats' new-look secondary

08:04 AM ET 11.09 | While the pinch won't be felt until Week 11 when newly acquired corner Aqib Talib returns, there's some speculation about what might happen in the New England secondary. Talib is sure to be starting at corner, but will he be opposite Devin McCourty, Kyle Arrington or rookie Alfonzo Dennard? If McCourty goes to safety and Steve Gregory and Patrick Chung are healthy, who is the odd man out? The trickle-down impact of acquiring Talib could have the greatest long-term impact on Chung, if McCourty makes a permanent move to safety -- something that the coaching staff has not, and likely will not confirm. A fourth-year safety, Chung is in a contract year and has not played since Week Six because of a shoulder injury.

The article does not consider the very real possibility that Talib will screw up again and get cut. The Pats are taking a calculated risk in picking him up; if he doesn't pan out, he will be gone.

Nobody in the Patriots' secondary should think his job is safe. Nobody.
It's a contract year for Pat Chung, but also for Aqib Talib.

Chung is a good player but has a difficult time staying injury free.

No one in that secondary has a guarantee to be on next season's roster. As for this season, Arrington will lose the most playing time with the arrival of Talib.

Chung is a keeper if he stays healthy for the rest of the year and is reasonable in his contract demands.
The Pats don't have enough quality in the defensive backfield to let any proven performer go unless they have a serious upgrade in hand. Even with Talib on board, they need depth and consistency.
