Cubs up for a blockbuster Castro-for-Upton swap?

08:18 AM ET 11.09 | Theo Epstein, already with a blockbuster shortstop trade to his credit in Boston, may have the opportunity again in Chicago. Make that splash your fans have been waiting for since you were hired. Trade Starlin Castro for Justin Upton. Javier Baez has your back. At 22, Castro is far from a polished product. But he's also probably the best young shortstop in baseball. Name someone better. I tried, and can't. That's good news for the Cubs. Even better is that Baez, 20 next month, it about to push Castro hard. ... While Castro recently signed a seven-year, $60 million contract, he is not exempt from trade rumors. There are only a few whispers now, but you soon may hear how the Cubs are as good of a fit with the Diamondbacks for Upton as the Rangers.

The Cubs should consider all options.

The Cubs are way behind everybody in the division now and if they let Theo trade away their franchise player in Castro for a outfielder that they don't really don't need it would set them back even further. If I am a Cub fan which one would you rather have Castro at ss, who is lock up , or some kid that played in A ball last year who had a good year, but has a long way to go to get to the bigs.

There a rumors that the Rays are after Upton as well.

should be talking about trading baez for upton. trading castro would be foolish

"I'll trade you my underachiever for your underachiever"

Hardly a blockbuster

Ruben Tejada is a better player,!!

This is a joke. If Baez lives up to the hype you simply move Castro (or Baez) to 3rd base, which has been a black hole for the Cubs since Aramis left. The Cubs also have two prospects they like in the OF in Brett Jackson and last years 1st rounder Almora. Unless they are getting a top young pitching back they aren't trading any young talent, but especially not their franchise player.

22-year old SS, with a career .297 average, developing power, can steal 20-30 bases. That's an underachiever? By your definition JJ Hardy is legally dead.

wiseup: The Cubs offense last year was Dejesus Soriano Rizzo and Castro. Upton is overated. You dont give up Castro unless the D-backs sweeten the deal with a top line pitcher.

Andrus, Profar....so far I have named 2, which may be why he could not name 1 is that there are 2 on the same team

If Baez is the goods at SS, move Castro to 3rd base. You solve the gaping hole at 3rd and solidify the left side of your infield for 10 years.

if the cubs are willing to trade castro but they need to trade his contract as well, or should the cubs pay in full castro's contract???

One word: idiotic!!!

November 9, 2012  12:28 PM ET

Castro is 22 and still developing, also signed to a very reasonable contract which means he will be easy to trade later if you want. Keep him.

Sorry, just stirring the pot.

Unless Castro is running a ****-fighting ring out of his meth lab, why would the Cubs consider this?
