Playoff bowls to freeze out little guys?

04:59 PM ET 11.09 | College football's new playoff system is set up to feature six major bowl games, with semifinal hosting rights rotating between them. Small conferences have been pushing for a seventh bowl to be added to the mix, especially with the Big Ten and SEC each taking two of the two spots all to themselves already. But that's not likely to happen.

Why do they get ONE slot? There is not a single B1G team this year that deserves to be in ANY major bowl.

not this year

Why does SEC get 2? Or ... why does ANY conference get a guaranteed slot? OK ok I know the reason but this the same old politics that makes us hate the BCS.

I'm not understanding this....

6 bowls is 12 teams playing for playoff access? So that would be 6 winners for 4 playoff slots?

I'm so confused....

And I thought it was going to be the top 4 teams regardless?????

One might even argue that the MAC is more deserving.

"Deserving" is the key word here.

Instead of selecting the 12 teams that have earned the right and deserve to be there, we'll guarantee 4 slots for SEC and B1G whether they have teams that deserve them or not.

This just waters down the playoffs.

Colonel, I was worried. I thought that maybe you "kicked the bucket".

"Six bowls is 'cleaner,' " a source said. "Each bowl would host four semifinals over the 12-year contract. A seventh bowl would be an appendage. It devalues the entire system ..."

A seventh bowl would "devalue the entire system"???? LOL the system was devalued the minute they handed out guaranteed slots. Guaranteed slots is the appendage.

QUOTE(#15):

We've argued this for months on these threads. A four-team playoff will not satisfy the also-rans. Bracket playoffs would demand an 8-team, quarter/semi/championship format played in December/early January to make it balanced.Eight teams = eight conference representatives. Figuring out the most worthy is the crux of the matter. I think eventually the current FBS will have to go to this pattern.

True...but it will be a while...isn't this current playoff contract for something like 12 years?

I think you're right on this time frame, D2. Contracts, of course, are made to be broken. I believe the major conferences/commissioners/bowl reps/NCAA poobahs will all have a "come to Jesus" moment after about four years of the current agreed-upon template. Squeaky wheels will get the grease.

From your lips to God's ears....
