Dickey is a good fit for Boston, if the price is right. He'd be a great follow-up to the retired Wakefield. Having a knuckleballer in the rotation makes it interesting for teams having to face them. A diversity of looks keeps the opposing offense on its toes.

If Boston was one missing piece away from contending I would agree with you. But they need rebuild from the ground up and this will take at least 2 years. I just don't think acquiring a 38 year old pitcher is how you want to start the rebuilding process.

If the price is right, take him.
Thirty-eight is ancient for a flamethrower. But a knuckleballer is just finding his stride. It's not about speed; it's about mathematical chaos. Learn to throw a ball with very little rotation and you can frustrate the best of them. And it screws up the timing of the opposition for the next game or two, making your other pitchers appear better.
Boston always *was* one missing piece away from contending. It's called a real pitching coach.

dickey should get a long term contract deal i don't see why he wont get a top offer from any other team, but since he still under contract with the mets then the team should sign him to a long term contract but if the mets are unable to extend his contract,,, then trade him and get as much you can for this elite pitcher,,,,

Good points. And it sounds like he will be on a short contract at a reasonable price; if a minor leaguer comes along that you need to look at, you can always sit Dickey down for a bit, let the kid have a turn. (Or sit some who is struggling, depending on the situation.) I don't see how it hurts the team to have him--even if he is a complete flop, you won't have so much money tied up in him that you can't go get someone else.

Agreed. A team would be acquiring Dickey at age 38 and paying top of rotation money. Wakefield represents the best case scenario. Wakefield was 56-57 after age 38. On the plus side, that is a lot of starts and a great record for your #4 or 5 starter. Sox were paying him short money and, at the end, carrying him year to year on contracts. Nothing long term. Wakefield, throughout his career, would follow up a good year with a bad year. Over his long career, he averaged 12-11 per season. So, in response to the "if you can get him for a good price argument", Dickey is due for a down year and the inevitable return to the statistical .500 norm. Smart teams will pass on him this offseason.

The Mets are smart to try to deal Dickey now, while his value is highest. But, any team that gives up too much for him will get burned. The Mets have lots of needs, but few teams would overpay for a knuckleballer.

I think a 2 year deal is fair after the year he had. Don't think a knuckleballer at 38 will get a long term contract. If he's happy in New York, they'll get it done.

If I was Boston ownership, I'd give him a 3-year deal no problem. Maybe even 4. But it would have to be the right price. No need to overpay. Security yes; highway robbery no.

I hope my Jays get him. They need a pitcher, and the Mets need a catcher. D'Arnaud is a good prospect, and the Jays have others in the system who other teams want.
