02:05 AM ET 11.12 | The Boston Red Sox signed David Ross as a free agent and now find they have a surplus of catchers. The Pittsburgh Pirates are nearly desperate for catching help. That's where Jarrod Saltalamacchia fits in. Don't be surprised to see the Pirates get on the phone and try to work out a deal with Boston for him. He has occasional power, but he's not a slam-dunk choice for Pittsburgh. Still, if Boston's demands aren't too high, the Pirates could make it work.

It makes sense if the Sox sign Napoli, the Bucs have what the Sox need young pitchers.

Going into the season with just Ross and Lavarnway sounds a little scary...Salty would have to bring some really good young players in for that to make sense.

I think Red Sox management believes that Lavarnway may have more upside than Salty, although he really didn't show it when given the chance in Aug and Sept. Plus, Salty will be a free agent in 2014.

QUOTE(#5):

Salty is actually only 2 years older than Ryan, which sounds weird. I'm hoping that Lavarnway's 2012 was just part of his learning process, but the idea of really counting on him for early next season scares me a little. I'm expecting the team to be mediocre with lots of young guys playing and improving, but I could see Ross and Lavarnway being really awful.

It was disappointing to see the inability of Lavarnway and Iglesias to take advantage of their extended playing time as the season wound down.

Saltalamacchia and Ross make a good catching combo for the next year or two, while Lavarnway marinates a bit longer at triple A.

Would be good to see the Sox load up on high minor pitchers with MLB potential in another year or two.
If they wind up with too many, then they have trade bait.

the pirates would like to get this young catcher but the price could be a little too high for them, who knows? they may and they may not get lucky with this trade after all,,,
