Panthers fire special teams coach

01:11 PM ET 11.12 | The Carolina Panthers have fired special teams coach Brian Murphy. Murphy was in his second season coaching the special teams for the Panthers after coaching special teams on the Minnesota Vikings from 2006-10. So far this season, kicker Justin Medlock has only missed two field goals out of nine attempted. Punter Brad Nortman has averaged 42.4 yards per punt and the net punt average has been 36.7 yards per kick, an average of 9.3 yards per return for opponents. He has also forced 11 fair catches, two touchbacks and 15 punts inside the 20 yard line. The punt protection has allowed one punt block this season.

Sounds like he did all right--maybe firing him is sort of a reward. He doesn't have to suffer through the rest of the season, and can get his resume in shape for next year.

It is another example of the head coach putting the blame on assistance coaches to try and show the owner he is making strikes to resolve their problem without being fired himself.
