Red Sox ready to deal a catcher

08:08 AM ET 11.12 | On the surface, Boston's addition of David Ross makes for a crowd at the catcher position. The Red Sox already control the rights to two major league-caliber catchers, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia coming off a season in which he hit 25 homers and Ryan Lavarnway dispelling doubts about his defense by starting a career-high 105 games behind the plate in Triple A and the majors. So, why in the world would the Sox sign another catcher? ... Ross, who will turn 36 before Opening Day, satisfies none of the Red Sox' most pressing needs, namely a first baseman, two outfielders and another starting pitcher. But with more than a half-dozen teams looking for catching, they may be positioned to trade either Saltalamacchia or Lavarnway.

I hope they keep Salty and hopefully a new hitting coach can make him a little more consitant at the plate. He played 1st a few games this season so moving him there wouldn't be a huge stretch since he's not one of the better defensive catchers as it is.

I think the Red Sox will have Lavarnway under their fiscal control for a few more years than they will Salty.

Ross is just a journeyman catcher with age against him, so the only reason I could think of that the Sox wanted him is to have a right handed hitting catcher with MLB experience and move Lavarnway in a trade.

I have two words for Cherington regarding moving Lavarnway: Josh Reddick. And here's two more: Hanley Ramirez. Don't give up on your young players too early. With the Nick Punto, expectations have finally been lowered to a realistic level in Red Sox nation. So, invest the time to allow your minor league prospects mature into major leaguers.

Salty didn't throw many runners out last season. I think they want to up grade the defense behind the plate.

No recent Sox catcher throws out many runners.

True. Ross will reverse that trend when he plays. He still throws very well. Maybe they figure they'll make Lavernway the starter and Ross is there to be his mentor.

this is the guy the Sox wanted 4 / 5 years back ... they finally got him 2 years back and now they want to get rid of him cause he "didn't throw many runners out?" ... granted he's not the best catcher out there, but he is more than adequate ... and catchers are very hard to come by ...

It's more than just throwing runners out. Seems like he's never on the same page with the pitchers who are always shaking him off, and have a tougher time getting into a grove because of it. Many pichers seem afraid to waste a pitch in the dirt with runners on because Salty is terrible at blocking the ball. Bottom line, he's a below average receiver. Trouble is Lavarnway isn't much better, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

As a Brave's fan, I am bummed that Ross is gone. Great pickup for Boston.

Several teams have wanted Salty and he's never really done as well as the scouts thought he would. But you make a good point, catching is very thin these days.

I will disagree ... he calls a decent game, not his fault the pitchers can't or won't make the pitch he calls ... that in essense is a big part of the Sox problem ... bad to very poor pitching ...

Salty's biggest issue has been and shall continue to be hitting ... not even a streaky hitter ... but 25 dingers isn't anything to sneeze at this year ...

I doubt he'll ever hit for average. At this point, he is what he is. 25 bombs is pretty good for catcher. I don't all of the Rays catchers combined over the last two years have hit that many.
