01:32 PM ET 11.13 | Even Mike D'Antoni's own friends think the Los Angeles Lakers might have been wise to hire Phil Jackson, sorta. The new Lakers' coach did an interview with Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday morning, and during it, he half-jokingly said that his friends were giving him some grief after he took the job over Jackson. "Hang in there," he said when asked what message he would send Lakers fans right now. "I have real close friends that were Lakers fans, and they were disappointed I got the job."

D'Antoni got himself into a bad situation. Not because the Lakers are a bad team or because he's not a good coach. The Lakers a championship team and D'Antoni is an offensive genius however the coupling and timing is bad. The problem is that
LAKERS ROSTER DOES NOT HAVE THE TYPE OF PLAYERS NEEDED TO SUCCEED IN D'ANTONI's SYSTEM.
It starts with Nash. He's not the puppy that run around like a hare anymore. He's old, slowed and defenseless.
Secondly you look at the back court and there's aging Kobe and Ron Artest. Not that they are not great players but they are not speedsters.
Then the frontcourt is filled with Howard and Gasol who aren't three point shooters or have a high basketball IQ when it comes to reading and passing.
This is bound to fail Laker fans. I'm sure D'Antoni knows this at the back of his mind - that the roster is not primed for the type of coaching he does best. But for 12 million dollas he can't see it as a mistake and I don't blame him.
Firing Brown was a smart move but then replacing him with D'Antoni ruined the party. Sorry Laker fans... you won't be at the finals this season.

I agree and think he is better offensive fit than Mike Brown but the current players don't fit the system either. D'Antoni's system does not fit the current Lakers roster. I see Kobe playing hero ball until Nash returns. So unless LA has some major roster changes that involve getting shooters or athletic wings that can shoot. I don't know how this will work.

I think D'Antoni will do better than Phil. Phil checked out the last 2 seasons anyway. He was coming to get a paycheck and let the team run itself. D'Antoni will come up with ways to get the veterans moving on Offense and bring in McMillan to help bolster the Defense. I think Brown could not reach the roster in preaching offense let alone defense.

Know what the funny thing about this is, they were dead serious. Mike maybe a nice guy, but he sure as hell is in the wrong business! Worse coach I've seen to date. Another case of the wrong coach on the wrong team.

not an LA fan here at all!!!!!
But they have to trade Pau and Metta for Mike's system to work
What are the chances Pau goes to Atlanta for Smith?
Metta well who knows what they could get for him maybe a bag of nuts and a draft pick?? LA to be a 500 team this year....
