Georgia players arrested, suspended

The first clear signal the offseason has begun for Georgia football has arrived: Two Bulldogs football players were arrested and jailed early Sunday morning. This marks the third straight offseason a Georgia player has been arrested in January or February. University of Georgia police arrested cornerback Donavon Baldwin, 21, for improper driving and driving under the influence at 3:05 a.m. Sunday. Fullback Fred Munzenmaier, 19, was arrested 34 minutes later by university police for underage possession of alcohol and being a pedestrian walking in the roadway. Both were booked into Athens-Clarke County Jail and later released on bond -- $750 for Munzenmaier and $2,000 for Baldwin. Georgia coach Mark Richt has suspended each of the players for at least the opening game against Georgia Southern. They also will have to perform community service and be subject to the university's judicial review process.

Made to sit against Georgia Southern? oh no, that is way too harsh..And window dressing...Just let them play, and stop all the phony stuff in college football. Theirs was a civil crime, and the penalties for that are enough...Nobody is buying the character matters routine from football schools anymore..

Report Offensive CommentYou know, I agree with you. All of these coaches try to put on the act that they are trying to build character. I don't think Georgia will miss those guys too much for the Ga Southern game.

Report Offensive CommentGood game to practice your D against.... You know Ga. Southern runs the same option offense that Tech will be running this year..

Report Offensive CommentThe community service thing imposed by the coach?..Give us all a break..University Presidents and coaches and the whole Educational community are based on perception. The reality is totally different. Situational ethics at their best..

Report Offensive Commenthaving thugs on your team is good for the ratings; sports writers love the criminal types. look at all the love the Miami teams got, and Huggin's Cincinatti teams, and the Ravens, Falcons, Bengals. sports writers look at off-season arrests as a condition of voting for a pre-season number 1.

Report Offensive CommentIt's not a good thing SILVERBLACK23 but it doesn't come close to compairing to Miami (thugU), or the ravens - there was no gun involved, and nobody got killed!
So far Miami is the only school that has to have a NO GUN rule!

Report Offensive CommentIf Baldwin didn't try to drive under the influence, it would be a regular college kid(s) doing college kid stuff. So this Texas & Miami stuff can get pushed to the back. The ONLY school that is trying to take your crown is FL st.
Other than that 50 yr fan has it right.
As for usc ............ well their above the law.

Report Offensive CommentI hate the walking while intoxicated offense. You gotta be a drunk batch to get caught for that too cause I've walked home many times schnockered and shouting in Athens without a cop giving me a look. Baldwin's dumb for getting behind the wheel while intoxicated, but Munzenmaier was being responsible for walking his A home instead of endangering others by driving.

Report Offensive CommentTypical football factory hypocrisy. A one game suspension against a cream puff opponent....you call that a punishment?
It's typical SEC crap.

Report Offensive CommentHate to say it, but I agree...what are they going to learn by sitting out against Georgia Southern? They are young so no, don't kick them off the team. But a slap on the wrist is not gonna cut it.

Report Offensive CommentAlso, doesn't the story read "at least one game".... so I guess it has not been figured out yet...
The True #7 | 01/22/08, 04:43 PM
Report Offensive CommentRicht has given out worse punishments for less. I just hope the punishment is not too harsh for doing normal college acts.
Remember Akeem Hebron? He wasn't allowed to be on the team that needed some depth in the linebacking corps last season.
Get off of UGA's back haters.

Report Offensive CommentI'm just saying, do we want UGA to be another Miami???
BR549 | 01/23/08, 09:01 AM
Report Offensive CommentNope.
Richt already gave Munzenmaier another game's suspension; I hope he gives the other guy some more than that b/c DUI is much worse than walking around drunk.
