08:07 AM ET 11.14 | Might the Kings be closer to a team on the move? Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms confirmed on Tuesday he recently met with representatives of a National Basketball Association team about moving that team to his city. The mayor declined to name the team. Sessoms made the comment during a Virginia Beach City Council meeting, city spokesman Marc Davis said. Several Virginia Beach news outlets have reported in the last two months that unnamed sources have told them the team is the Sacramento Kings. The Kings reissued a statement Tuesday saying they have been approached by numerous cities interested in landing a team, but declined to comment further. The Virginia Beach mayor's meeting with representatives of a team was described as preliminary.

Check your history. The old ABA had a thriving team which played some games in Hampton, VA called the Virginia Squires. This team featured Dr. J and the Ice Man George Gervin. This was back in the early 70's. I can remember vividly going to games as a kid. At one time in that area, all you saw on the playground were those red, white, and blue basketballs. Bottom line is that area once supported a pro team, whether it can do it again? Who knows! Lots of military and transplants in the area. The issue I see, is not the interest, but the cost. Been to an NBA game recently? It isn't cheap!

If the Kings move, it'll be within the Western Conference. The only way a move out to the east would work is if another team was placed out west to fill Sacto's spot. Few teams make sense to do so, and the only one I can think of is the Bucks. MEM should go to the EC before any other team from the west is considered, move or otherwise.

Avg attendance for the Squires was 2500. NBA did not merge this team because area was not viable (large enough) to support a franchise.
Maloofs are probably the worst owners in the league. Be careful what you wish for..
