Can someone else play for the Cup? Yes

08:24 AM ET 11.14 | No season doesn't necessarily mean no Stanley Cup competition during what may be a dark NHL winter -- legally speaking, anyway. Since 1926, it has been exclusively awarded to the NHL team that wins the playoffs each season. But as a landmark 2006 court decision made clear, there's no reason that has to be the case. ... The outcome of the landmark ruling was that the trustees and the league were forced to admit that the NHL does not, in fact, own the Stanley Cup after all. So it could theoretically return to its roots as a challenge trophy in any season where an NHL champion isn't crowned -- as may end up being the case this season. ... There's no indication that's a likely development, however.

Options:
1. Skip 2012-13 without comment
2. Enscribe "2012-23 Season cancelled due to greed"
3. Enscribe the team name and players of a champion team
I prefer option 3, the major question being the method for picky the Stanley Cup champion for the season.
Put the AHL champion against the NCAA champion in a best of 7. Or AHL vs KHL. Or IIHF World Cup champion. Or whatever. The Winter Classic is interesting because it is a different format. Going outside the NHL to pick a champion is fair game, and I bet the ratings for that series would be pretty good.
This is a fight between millionaires and billionaires, and I'm past taking sides. I'm on the side of fans who want to see some good hockey. Give players who may never have a shot at playing for the cup again a chance to hoist it, and you'll see 110% effort and passion, even if they lack 'superstar' skills.

I propose the Calgary Hitmen and the Edmonton Oil Kings play for it ! A best of 23 games tourney should do it ;-)
