Can Toronto lure Cox now?

08:13 AM ET 11.15 | Toronto's roster, after Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, Emilio Bonifacio and John Buck arrive, has a new credibility. [The city] hasn't been viewed as a destination city for baseball in roughly two decades, since the Blue Jays' most recent postseason appearance in 1993. Now the Blue Jays have turned into a veteran team overnight. Reyes and Buehrle -- who hail from the Dominican Republic and Missouri, respectively -- may need to be convinced that Toronto is a place where they can win and be merry. Perhaps Bobby Cox is up to the task. The 71-year-old is probably a longshot to be the Blue Jays' next manager. But the notion starts to make sense the more one thinks about it -- as, I am told, at least one person in the organizational hierarchy has done.

John Farrell might be wondering if he should have just stayed in Toronto. The Blue Jays have a stronger window to the top than the Red Sox now.

And really, the Jays gave up nothing to get the guys they did. They still have a stacked farm to pull off a few more moves.

What's Cito Gaston up to?

He's got the same role in Toronto that Cox has in Atlanta - consultant or cheerleading advisor or something.

Nobody wins anything in November.

"the notion starts to make sense the more one thinks about it "....No, the more one drinks perhaps.

I don't know much about the minor league kids that went to Miami, but that Alverez kid looked like one hell of a prospect. His stuff reminded me of a young Pedro Martinez.

Alvarez has promise, undoubtedly. But until he gets a third pitch, he's not going to do you much good. He gets figured out pretty quickly over the course of a game.

Tell that to CFL teams..

he's only 22, time to learn a 3rd pitch like a change up. If not you can always make him a closer.

It's not a CFL thread.

And really, they shouldn't have. What do you really think they got back?

Reyes is a 30 year old shortstop who's averaged 123 games per season over the last five

I like Buehrle, but he is a 34 year old average-pitching workhorse who's due $48m over the next three years.

Johnson's fragile as **** - since his rookie year, he's averaged 129 innings per season. He pitched 190+ innings last year, but his ERA wasn't that sparkling and now he's moving to the most offensively stacked division in the majors.

Are Jays fans excited about Bonafacio and his .645 OPS? Or how about Bell and his 5+ ERA?

I really don't see what all the fuss is about with this trade. Seems like these two GMs should wash their hands after exchanging these turds.

Bobby Cox will stay retired.

Yeah, probably a little too much hype and hoopla over this trade but I do think it makes Toronto a little better than they were last year and if Bautista plays the entire year they just might be there in the thick of things.

No kidding. As if the idea of coaching Mark Buehrle will lure him out of retirement...

I agree that it makes them a little better than they were last year, and you're right, if Baautista bounces back, that will improve them as well.

They were 73-89, 22 games off the division and 20 games off the wild card.

I am a Tiger fan so there is no Bias here. The Jays were doing excellent when Romero was pitching well and Morrow wasn't hurt same with Hutchinson. then you have Bautista hurt, Johnson sucked and he is gone, and hopefully for them Lawrie brings some of the power we saw when he first came up.

Yeah, but maybe Reyes stays healthy, bats over .300, and plays great SS. Maybe Johnson can stay healthy and be one of the best pitchers in the AL. Buehrle stays healthy, and is consistent, and is now backed up by a very potent (when healthy) offence. I don't know who "Bell" is. The phone company?

The trade is exactly what it looks like - a high-risk, high-reward deal. If it fails, oh well. They tried. But something had to give to get this franchise somewhere, so why not?
