10:53 PM ET 11.15 | In a couple of weeks, Jay Bruce will make a lifetime commitment to his fiancee when the two celebrate their wedding day. On the baseball side of life, the 25-year-old would like to sign an extension that would enable him to possibly finish his career in Cincinnati. Bruce is interested in adding another six years to the deal. The timing might seem odd since he is already under a contract that is guaranteed through 2016. To see such dedication from a player to one organization is becoming less commonplace these days. Players want paid, and while there is nothing wrong with wanting that salary, they realize there's potential to get a raise elsewhere. The team becomes somewhat secondary.

The Reds would be idiots to extend him that far. Sure, they could wait a couple of years and he could become an even bigger star and they would have to pay more, but the odds for that are lower than the odds that he will be a valuable producer for 10 MORE YEARS!!!!

The guy is only a .250 hitter and strikes out a lot. Those kind of hitters frequently flame out early. If I were the Reds, I'd sit on the current deal for at least 2 more years before I'd give him an extension.

Career long commitments don't make a lot of sense for either the team or the player--players get hurt, don't develop the way you hoped, or don't fit with the talent that eventually winds up on the team. Or the coach you like so much gets fired and replaced by Bobby V, and the fans start to boo you, and your new wife decides she hates the town and wants to move somewhere else.

Get paid for a decent length of time if you can, and keep the long term options open. Ballplayers make plenty of money, no need to secure every last penny.

nice combo but nothing left to add extra hitters to the team,,,,
