Trio of New England Patriots defenders fined

05:04 PM ET 11.16 | Three players on the New England Patriots were fined for doling out some heavy hits on the Buffalo Bills last week, with Brandon Spikes unsurprisingly receiving the largest fine that totaled $25,000. Why? You guessed it. For that hit on Ryan Fitzpatrick that was clean, no matter what names Fitzpatrick tries to call Spikes. I mean, you would think Fitzpatrick would worry about actually not throwing a game-sealing pick, because his team has given up on him. And for good reason. It took them enough picks and a bad contract to realize that Fitzpatrick is not the answer. Anyway, I don't want to go too far on my soap box here. I said "unsurprising," because we all know that the NFL is pretty incompetent when it comes to doling out punishments when a vicious linebacker like Spikes hits a QB who later complains about it like Fitzpatrick. It doesn't even matter if the hit was actually deserving of a fine or not; it's all about protecting the QB. Spikes has been fined for the second time this year.

I totally agree with the post. However, as a Patriot fan, I'm a little uncomfortable complaining about the NFL pampering QBs.

It's a quarterback driven league so I get what the NFL is trying to do, they're just doing it poorly.

I am trying to figure out what the NFL wants. Perhaps the defense should have laser tag guns and the QB the recepters. when the second receptor turns red he is sacked.

Maybe the league is making up for the pass interference call against Buffalo that sailed through the uprights.

The writer is suggesting that a QB shouldn't throw an interception because his team has given up on him? I can think of lots of reasons to avoid interceptions, but that isn't one of them.

And what does the QB's contract and interception nubers have to do with Spikes being fined?
