Report: Buehrle, Reyes claim Marlins broke verbal no-trade promises

09:41 AM ET 11.17 | Miami Marlins fans are not the only ones feeling betrayed by ownership's decision to break up the club. Shortstop Jose Reyes and left-hander Mark Buehrle, two of the five Marlins headed to Toronto in a pending blockbuster, are upset that the team broke verbal promises to them regarding trades, according to major-league sources. The Marlins do not award no-trade clauses, but club officials, while recruiting Reyes and Buerhle as free agents last offseason, assured both players that they would not be moved, sources said. Buehrle knew the Marlins' history of dumping high-priced players, and it concerned him, according to a friend. Team president David Samson, however, told both Buehrle and his wife, Jamie, that the team was committed to a long-term vision, sources said. A source close to Reyes, asked if the shortstop also received verbal assurances from the Marlins that he would not be traded, responded, "The answer is yes. A vehement yes."

Well, you took the money without the promise being written. So what it comes down to is the greedy vs the liar. Takes your pick.

Too bad Buehrle. Maybe you should've looked to stay in Chicago and not follow that turd in the punch bowl Guillen to Miami.

Memo to Reyes and Buehrle:
Confuscious say, "Verbal promises are worth as much as the piece of paper they aren't written on".

I don't think the White Sox ever really indicated that they wanted Buerhle to stay.
Guys, you're getting paid a lot of money to play baseball. Toronto is one of the gem cities in North America. You could potentially be on a very good team. Enjoy it, and be glad you got the hell out of the Marlins' organization.

As a Jays fan, I hope they get over this fast (can't help with the taxes and pit bull ban). The upside is that they're coming to a team with a good shot of contending in a city that's STARVING for a winner.

these guys took more money in exchange for a contract minus a no-trade clause. The guys were dealing with LORIA. Either they, or their agent should have known better. Greed got the best of them and they got played. Deal with it. In the medium-term they will be playing for a much better ball club. Althuogh Im certain not a fan of the city of Toronto, there are ALOT of worse places to get moved in the MLB.

This is going a bit far. If you like really big cities that shut down after sun down, then yes, its a great place. If you like a city that likes to think of themselves as a second rate nyc because they play show tons of cheesy second rate broadway shows, then yes, Toronto is your town. Still, its a hell of alot better than alot of other cities in the league.

Bumbling Bud has to take this team away from this clown, similar to what he did with Frank McCourt.

The difference being Frank couldn't make payroll. After the trades the Marlins have made, their payroll is lower than an average 7-11.

It's more likely that Bud will have MLB buy back the Marlins then give Loria a new franchise elsewhere. Of course, it would be reasonable and prudent to give Loria an interest-free loan to help finance the purchase.

Baseball has become a joke. They are afraid of Mark Cuban, yet have no problem with this clown. This franchise has no chance of succeeding now. They will never again be able to acquire anybody in the free agent market.
