Notre Dame doing the impossible

08:17 AM ET 11.19 | Whether Notre Dame goes on to win a national title, the Irish wake up at No. 1, something many thought to be a longshot -- forever. "We're not doing this to be No. 1 for three or four days," Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly said Sunday. "We're doing this to have a consistent program that's in the hunt every year. That's the focus of this program." And that's the second part of this: The team that was never again supposed to be a real player on the national landscape, that couldn't attract the proper athletes, that couldn't survive without the protective cuddle of a conference, isn't just in it this year. The Irish look like they're back in the discussion for the long haul.

Doesn't this apply to most teams? Can't think of one that says "Let's be good for one year and forget the rest."

How many early departures will they start to have? If they have players good enough to compete for NCs, the NFL will be calling.

Here props to all the Domer Homers....I've been as hard on them as anyone, but they've been good sports about it.

It finally is NEXT year....enjoy it & congrats on being the last undefeated and the consensus #1 team.

What a difference a day makes. Friday ND had to be in a conference to have a shot in the four team play-off. Now, they're the toast of nation (except in Alabama). Let's get through the season before everyone gets carried away. Did no one learn anything from last Saturday?

Coach Kiffin says a freshman by the name of Max Wittek will make his first career start in place of Matt Barkley.
Remember Trojan fans, I said no lame excuses this time,, who's this kid and whats he got?

How soon people forget,, the Irish have ruled the world of College football. There was a time believe it or not when this would be just another average year for ND.

Notre Dame was getting sick of Alabama looking like it was going to take over the #1 tradition in all of college football (some say they already have and NOT just Alabama fans!!!)

We kinda were! We're upset that you guys claim our 1973 title, even though we beat you in the Sugar Bowl AND claim to have more National champions.(Cough cough, 1941) ;)

Are you also upset at Texas for doing the exact same thing in 1970?

If we handle the Trojans, will we earn your respect?

You know the answer brother,, this is why I am very disappointed that Matt is out and they lost to UCLA.

TRADITION!!!!!!! LET'S NOT GET CARRIED AWAY.

I'm not talking about wins and losses but pure recognizability. As a guy who grew up in Virginia pulling for UVA and who went to a small school called Floraida A&M, I am unbiased when I say no program is more recognizable than the University of Michigan. From their helmet to their fight song, they did it right. Ask a guy in Maine, Utah, New Mexico to hum Alabama's fight song and then ask him to hum Michigan.

Till GA beats them.

The possible scenarios are abound, but I do NOT see this ND team falling to a Barkleyless 7-4 Trojan team.
Poor Noles are getting a raw deal, tell your AD to strengthen that schedule next time.
