Cal keeps coach in limbo

08:20 AM ET 11.19 | So much for a quick resolution. On the day after the end of Cal's worst football season in 11 years, there was no decision on coach Jeff Tedford's future. Tedford was scheduled to meet Sunday with athletic director Sandy Barbour after she watched the Bears lose 62-14 at Oregon State on Saturday night. Barbour's office at Haas Pavilion was locked and dark Sunday afternoon, and she did not respond to a text message asking for an update. Likewise, Tedford wasn't available for interviews. An athletic department spokesman said in the early evening that there was no decision made or announcement planned. A previously scheduled season-ending team meeting was moved from Sunday afternoon to Monday, with no details available.

Hey man, congrats on a big win Saturday night. Even though there were bigger games on in that time slot, I just couldn't quit watching your game. Man, what a track meet. That was a very entertaining game (except I thought M Stoops was gonna have a stroke).
Any idea what the total offense number was? I bet it got close to 1500 combiined yards. It was over 1200 and 2 more TD's were scored.

If I were UW, I wouldn't let Lupoi go, hell the Huskies are showing a little bit of life, for the first time in years.

Yeah, I know, but I like Lupoi. You are right he is a Cal grad and I'm sure he would take the HC job if offered.

It was insane. I know neither Stoops is happy with the defense played, but sometimes stuff just happens. They have decided the last few games to play 7 DB's and no LB's and have been getting gouged because they play man-man and no one supports the run. Landry Jones was calm, and looked like a Senior and made play after play. I was concerned going in because I thought WVU was due a big night, they lost to Okie Lite on mistakes in the kicking game. All-in all it was a great game and just glad to get out of there with a W!

Lupoi is barely qualified: he's been a line coach for a long time. His talents are in recruiting and you can see from a guy like Ron Zook where talented recruiting gets you - only so far. CAL's problem is that it can't get a top-rated coach if it owes Tedford big bucks, which it does. So Tedford probably stays on the "Mike Reilly principle": last year's disaster doesn't mean that next year can't be much, much better. (Plus, CAL saves money on T.) Of course, Tedford doesn't get himself what's wrong. It's kind of pathetic that he's so disconnected with football reality in the PAC 12. I mean why would keep playing Maynard when you have Kline on the bench? Answer: because Kline doesn't know the playbook. So what, Jeff? If he can play, he can play - and Maynard didn't know the playbook either. Tedford didn't even know to try to save his own job. You think Brian Kelly wouldn't have played the kitchen sink if it meant winning, Jeff? Get a clue, bud.

Yep. But Tedford's out the door cost is, what, $6 million? That's money on money and what're you going to do to get a decent successor. (I got news: that ain't Lupoi who went to WA to get more money anyway.)

How you going to do that with an empty kitty? CAL is a state school and budgeted by the state. The state is **** up financially. CAL doesn't have the big donors even schools like Stanford have. I'm betting Tedford stays through (part of) next season on the "Reilly Principle" - and the fact that CAL can't pay him to leave AND get a good coach.

He is probably the best coach Cal has or ever will have.....and they will fire him because their expectations are absurd.

No, CAL had some good coaches in the past like Mooch and Snyder who were quite good. Tedford stabilized the program but his coaching has fallen off severely in the last several years. The fact is that he set the bar for CAL, getting new facilities, etc., and then didn't bother to reach it. It's on him one way or the other. (He's not a bum, though.)
