Tennessee hamstrung by shaky finances

08:20 AM ET 11.19 | Tennessee AD Dave Hart admitted Sunday that the program was in a "tenuous position." [Tennessee] isn't merely searching for a new football coach. If only it were that simple. UT is searching for an identity in the fluid, high-pressure, big-bucks world of intercollegiate athletics. ... The athletic department is on shaky fiscal ground due to a minimal reserve fund. Certain academic hurdles have hamstrung the product UT puts on the field, Hart said. Hart will choose the new coach to lead the Vols down the correct path. Make no mistake, it leads uphill. But everybody, from the ivory tower to the field house, will be on the same page in Hart's vision. "The chancellor doesn't want us to be at a competitive disadvantage of any nature," Hart said.

Could O'Brian be added to the list for the UTk and Arky postitions?

Takes $$$$ to make $$$$

It's ok....sec pays big bucks to each school.

Can they come up w/ the $10 mill a year that is the asking price (rumored) for Gruden and his staff?

If not, Petrino is the best value buy.....bet he'd sign for $2 mill

Only if you throw in a motorcycle and an intern!

Must be nice to get a parting gift of several million after the pink slip. Most people are lucky to get a few weeks pay. I remember Bob Nardelli of Home Depot got a parting gift of spme $200 million. I gots to get a gig like that.

Can Tennessee afford any more ridicule? First, Fulmer and Pearl, then Kiffen, now Dooley maybe going winless in SEC play. Hiring Petrino would be like pouring gasoline on the fire.

Ok, ok, I'll do it but instead of orange pants I want twinkies while they're still on the shelf.

Depends on whether they are looking to make a splash with a big name. Plenty of good coaches out there looking for a chance to show what they can do.

I remember a guy that had been in the position of CEO of McKesson Inc. for about 9 months and got several million (I think it was about 7 million) for termination over a merger gone bad that he probably had nothing even to do with. They cleaned house and gave him several million for 9 months' work. /shaking my head.

COngrats, Joe.....looks like Gump's back in the driver seat. IMHO, Notre Dame's a better match-up than Oregon would have been for you guys.

BCS is a trip, huh? Just when you think you're out, the whole world turns upside down.

Well that Cleveland Browns Billionaire owner is a VOL.....So he will either get Gruden to be HC of the Browns or UTk...

Too bad he will spend all of his money to get Saban to the Browns.

I heard that Jimbo Fisher might want out of FSU for the exact reason of finances. Yes, he is guaranteed a salary, but if FSU is hurting for finance, then you don't get facility upgrades, your recruiting budget is not as big as you want it or probably need it, etc.

Thanks for the good wishes. I am not naive enough to believe a bunch of you are pulling for Alabama, but I do appreciate the best wishes.

Crazy just like last year. I've said all along, win all your games and you don't have to worry about it. When we lost, I thought it was it, just like I thought last year and both years we're back to controlling our own destiny.

Crazy.
